5 reasons to hate Minecraft

Indie darling status be damned, we take Minecraft to task

Let it be known that we love indie games – they’re a great alternative to the same old linear brown shooters that every major developer religiously cranks out these days. That said, people are way too quick to overlook an indie game’s faults just because it wasn’t produced by EA. Minecraft’s meteoric rise to indie stardom has made Markus “Notch” Persson a multimillionaire and established Minecraft as one of the most successful indie games ever made.

But we’re not concerned with success here. We’re concerned with hating…

1. It’s a fad

Art by Alex Barrett

Remember Pogs and Hypercolor shirts? These things were fads, novelty products that exploded into popularity and sold millions – seemingly overnight – but were forgotten almost as quickly. The internet has multiplied fad phenomenons a million fold, and thanks to viral videos of user generated content spread via congregate sites like Reddit, Minecraft blew up big. Little did most gamers eager to jump on the bandwagon know that those cool BioShock level recreations likely took groups of people hundreds of hours to create, not including the long process of even figuring out how to play the damn game.

2. It’s user-unfriendly

Belying its seemingly simple interface is the cold fact that Minecraft is impenetrable without the Minecraft Wiki. With no tutorial or direction to speak of, Minecraft is unplayable without a browser window open to the wiki so you can figure out what’s possible. I realize that to some people, wandering around and arduously grinding blocks for hours trying to see what random combination of stuff actually does something is fun, but these are the same people who enjoy meticulously micromanaging resource acquisitions and maintaining Excel spreadsheets for their EVE Online accounts.

3. It’s not a game

While we appreciate open-ended games, there’s a difference between having some structure and having none at all. Minecraft stretches the term “game” to its absolute limit. Giving the player a sandbox with no goals is a lot like renaming Microsoft Paint “Art Quest” and claiming it’s the most creative videogame ever made. Minecraft is less a game than it is a digital LEGO box for OCD man-children. The fact that the vast majority of popular Minecraft vids are little more than tributes to videogame characters or internet memes isn’t shocking given the fanbase. What is shocking is the insane amount of time invested in things like making a tribute to the flash-in-the-pan “Deal With It” dog.

4. It’s only fun because you make it fun

Being a completely open-ended game with no real goals or purpose, Minecraft relies on the player to find interesting things to do. This usually boils down to “Build a big house and maybe tunnel into the depths” or “Make it to the Nether and kill a Ghast.” Outside of that, I hope you enjoy grinding for colored blocks and then putting them together forever, because that’s all you’ll be doing here. Having to waste your precious time, creative spark and effort on making a game entertaining seems like a lot of effort for something that’s ultimately little more than a cutely styled plaything.

5. It wastes your creativity

Inspiration for creating music, paintings, sculptures or whatever else is fleeting… it only comes once in a while. So what possible reason is there for you to waste your spark/drive spending 300 hours building a 400-foot tall facsimile of the Reddit guy? Other than pandering to Reddit users for up-votes, of course. Congrats, your hard work has made another viral video to promote the game, more advertising dollars for Reddit and helped Notch acquire yet another solid gold house and rocket car.

    First? Great list, great "Game"

I think only the last one holds any real value for hate.. which is a shame, as it does help inspire a lot of ideas. Just those ideas are generally Minecraft-based..

I love you Week of Hate! These are probably the funniest articles you guys post. I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard by the time I read "solid gold house and rocket car."

    UPBOATS IS ONE WORD. Represent.

I love the week of hate, is that bad?
  • BackwaterRifle - April 27, 2011 9:55 p.m.

Minecraft isn't a game, its an synthetic opium drug.
  • Yeager1122 - April 27, 2011 10:06 p.m.

Maybe i should play this not a game nah i would probably hate it to much.

And here I was questioning GamesRadar's devotion to HateWeek. To pick at MineCraft (har har) shows some steel or at least the ore needed to be smelted down for its iron to be later be alloyed into said steel. One major thing that separates MineCraft from, say, Mario Paint is that Mario Paint could be used to make nifty motion comics with their own soundtrack if one had the patience for it,then record them to videotape. In an age before ShockWave Flash or even MS Paint, it was the the best thing going. Nowadays, there are far better choices to use computer programs to act on one's inner inspiration for creative endeavors...even stacking up all of those disused videotapes lying around to make a meat-space mock-up of Minecraft if one doesn't want to waste money on plastic construction blocks. What else are the videotapes going to be used for? There was also no pretense of any other goal to Mario Paint other than make one's own fun with an art program and mouse that costs the same price as a Super NES game except in the hidden fly-swatting game on the cartridge...okay, so maybe they're alike in that one area.

Looking at section 3 again, it appears that the Deal With It Dog is telling everyone to deal with the fact that MineCraft is not a game. If that's not a good use for reproducing a meme in Minecraft, there likely isn't one.
  • Fiirestorm21 - April 27, 2011 10:20 p.m.

Yeah this is basically why I could never get into it.
  • garnsr - April 27, 2011 10:22 p.m.

It seems like every game on the 100 Greatest Games is being discredited one way or another on this website and podcasts. Weird phenomenon.
  • icbacomingupwithapropername - April 27, 2011 10:29 p.m.

Die Grimm die! Err anyway now that's outta my system this is actually pretty fair and I can't help but agree with some of the points despite my love for minecraft.
  • Goom - April 27, 2011 10:34 p.m.

@garnsr - it IS the week of hate... Fair points and it was worth a giggle. I wish I had this list for this year's March Mayhem over at the Escapist. It's a good job this is PC only, so I can't play it, otherwise I'd never leave the house.
  • bamtan - April 27, 2011 10:40 p.m.

mmmm...delicious hate. I love the game but for some weird reason I also love listening to people hate on games I like. It's some bizzare masochistic tendency that I have.
  • BadCompanyBrik - April 27, 2011 11:31 p.m.

I know this is a Week of Hate thing, so I'll try not to take it too seriously, but 4 is basically a direct product of 3, so it's hard to call it a separate point (there is no goal or objective to occupy you therefore you have to create your own.) And I think it's likely that points 2-4 will be resolved once the game is out of beta and it becomes less of a 'testing infinite world' and more of a game based on that infinite world. Point 1 is just stupid to consider because every game has that same cycle of playing it until you exhaust your enjoyment of it, and then moving on, and possibly coming back some indeterminate amount of time later. Minecraft has entertained people for hours just like any other game (and for significantly less money than a lot of games) and now people will be moving on. How that makes it different from any other game I'm not sure. #5 makes me scratch my head. If Minecraft inspires someone to do something, and they use that spark to create something in Minecraft, doesn't that bring Minecraft back around to be neutral in terms of creativity wasted? It 'wastes' time, sure, but not creativity. All games 'waste' time. Again, I know this is just for Week of Hate, but I don't enjoy the hate if it doesn't make a moderate amount of sense (eg, hated boxart cliches were all valid.)

Umm am I the only one who thinks this article should be retitled "5 reasons for those who don't play to hate minecraft"? Honestly, not a single one of these reasons makes me mad at minecraft... "Its a fad"? While that may be true, I don't think it can be entirely called a fad until it dies off. I'm sure stuff like cell phones, the internet, and video games in general were "just a fad" at their start. User-Unfriendly? Ya I guess so, but its not like searching stuff on the internet drives my hate... Its not a game? Neither is 30 Rock, I still love it Its only fun because you make it fun? Well that's kind of the point isn't it? You see a goal and you go for it, and while working on that goal you realize something else you want to do. Its really a testament to your own creativity the longer you play the game. And now I've led myself right into "It wastes your creativity". Absolutely true, but again that's a hate generated from players, that a hate generated from your neglected friends TL;DR
  • ItsCarterYo - April 27, 2011 11:43 p.m.

I imagine most people who play it didn't just stumble upon minecraft.net then pay 20 bucks and buy it. Most people either heard about it from a friend or on a forum and have previous knowledge on it. And even if they don't, how hard is it to google search "how do i do minecraft?" People aren't idiots. It is open ended which lets you do any thing you want! Its freakin brilliant! I would rather have this type of game than one that you have the same repeated goal each time. That would get old. "It’s only fun because you make it fun" yes because self made fun is the worst type of fun. It doesn't seem like you're understanding the game. You act like building as house or making a structure is not fun. If so, this game obviously isn't for you. And finally, wasting my creativity?! It is giving me a medium for me to express it. I cant a paint a 5 story mansion with a waterslide then ride the waterslide. Either this game isn't for you, you are doing it wrong, or someones a lil butthurt about your first shelter being creeper'd.

Actually, some of these are reasons why I love Minecraft so much. It just drops you in your own unique world and lets you explore to your hearts content. Whether your goal is to constrict a fortress, build a mine, tame an army of wolves, or (my favorite) just explore all the little secret caverns and beautiful mountains that the world creates, anything is possible. And the best part is, the variety is limitless. You can never run out of worlds to explore, and each world provides a completely different experience.
  • leumas021 - April 28, 2011 12:19 a.m.

You guys are kind of helping him obtain that solid gold house and rocket car too, you know. I mean you might as well link to the Minecraft demo. Before anyone says anything I do realize this is the week of hate and I thought this was an entertaining article.
  • ChiChiRocket - April 28, 2011 12:20 a.m.

Did anyone else catch the Simpsons joke at the end of #5?
