Game Gear, TurboGrafx games coming to 3DS Virtual Console

The 3DS made news when it was confirmedvintage Game Boy gameswould be available as digital downloads, and now it's poised to bring back even more handheld gaming classics. Sega has just announced it will revive part of its Game Gear library for the new device, and Nintendo has also revealed TurboGrafx-16 games are planned as well.

The timing works out nicely for Sega, as 2011 happens to mark two decades of Game Gear's battery-sapping existence.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Game Gear system, and we believe that releasing these titles on the groundbreaking Nintendo 3DS is a great way to commemorate the occasion," said Sega VP of digital business Haruki Satomi in a statement. He added, "Both new fans and those with fond memories of time spent playing their Game Gear will surely find something to love in our upcoming lineup of Nintendo eShop titles."

Sega plans to release five Game Gear titles over the new digital storefront. However, this news is not quite as huge as the presence of Game Boy games on the 3DS, because severalpotential Game Gearreleases are essentially ports from theSega Master System, which already has a large presence on Wii'sVirtual Console. The same goes for TG-16 games - we've already had access to these things for years, so it's not too huge of a draw.
