Details on Luke Skywalker's presence in Star Wars: The Last Jedi have been sketchy so far. Thankfully, we may now have a better idea of what he’ll be wearing and it could reveal a lot about his character in Episode 8.
Unconfirmed reports from MakingStarWars.net suggest that Luke has ditched the lighter garb from The Force Awakens in favour of a darker and dirtier get-up. This could mean we will see a darker side to Skywalker, rather than the cuddly bearded shaman we saw at the end of Episode 7.
MakingStarWars.net commissioned an illustration from artist Lumberjack Nick to better show Skywalker’s new Episode 8 outfit, which comes from a training sequence where ‘Rey is frustrated with Luke’s teachings’. We’re excited to see how that tension plays out on screen but, for now, it appears that the clothes make the man.
Grey is in this season for Luke. He is covered head-to-toe in it, donning a minimally tailored grey top, boots and a cool cloak/shawl combo. Very brooding. There's also shawl across his neck which reminds us of past Sith Lords. Has Luke had a change of heart? His clothes certainly stand out and, if his robes are dirty, could it be the result of a Jedi Master in action? Or maybe he’s just gone full Yoda. Never go full Yoda, Luke.
It’s worth mentioning that Luke’s costume lacks a belt needed to store his lightsaber. This doesn’t mean he’s a suspenders and braces type of guy, but hints at something far more important: Luke Skywalker may not even need a lightsaber anymore, and he’s been seen holding some sort of stick (or possibly even a spear or staff) instead, in a similar fashion to Yoda.
We’re torn. On one hand Luke’s green lightsaber is as iconic as the metallic hand that holds it, but the lack of weapon could mean his Force powers have increased to an even greater level. Could the Jedi who stood toe-to-toe with Darth Vader be even stronger now? That’s kinda awesome to think about.
