King Kong and Godzilla will clash in new trilogy

The rumors are (somehow) true. Warner Bros. and Legendary are bringing King Kong and Godzilla into close proximity for a colossal creature caper. Suspicions were raised last month when Legendary shifted Kong: Skull Island from Universal to Warner Bros, kickstarting a wildfire of speculation that the studios would attempt a crossover between the two creatures. And now it turns out their punch-up will be positioned as the last part of a major monster trilogy.

The official press release dubs the whole extravaganza "an epic, new shared cinematic franchise" that's slated to begin with an initial trio of movies. 2017's Kong: Skull Island, 2018's Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs. Kong due in 2020.

Plot details on the final instalment are thin on the ground , but judging by its self-explanatory title it shouldn't come as too much of a shock. All three movies will contain a continuity through Monarch, the organisation introduced in 2014's Godzilla, and at some point iconic Godzilla figures Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah are expected to make an appearance.

While we've got five years to find out who is pitted against the beasties in their deathmatch, you won't have to wait too long to assuage all your gigantic monster cravings. Kong: Skull Island opens the trilogy on March 10, 2017.
