Anatomy Of Hell review

The Girl (Amira Casar) pays The Guy (porn star Rocco Siffredi) to visit her house on four consecutive nights. "Watch me where I'm unwatchable," she sighs, stepping out of her clothes for a succession of sexual exhibitions/ confessions that melt his detachment.

French director Catherine Breillat completes her cycle of explorations (Romance, A Ma Soeur!) with Anatomy Of Hell, a risibly pretentious look at how men view women... And how women view men viewing women. Apparently inspired by Greek tragedy, Courbet's painting The Origin Of The World and the Old Testament (stay awake), it's frank, confrontational and a load of old bollocks.

Have a squiz at this dialogue, The Girl asking The (gay) Guy why he finds excrement acceptable, but menstrual blood nauseating: "Fecal matter is inert; it's been through life's cycle." Or this: "The elasticity of a boy's anus never lies." Still, the lighting's soft and silken, lending an ethereal glow to the garden-tool-up-the-vagina scene...
