Unbothered by RAMageddon, PSVR 2 is thriving at its lowest-ever price

RAMpocalypse be damned, PSVR 2 has returned to its lowest-ever price. While other computing tech and gaming hardware struggles to stay at MSRP, (or launch at all, in the case of the Steam Frame), Sony's VR headset is laughing at them all. It's dropped back to its lowest-ever price, which is going to be all the more tempting for folks who are awaiting launch and pricing news for Valve's upcoming visor.

It's hard to believe PSVR 2 launched at a higher cost than the PS5 it was designed to work alongside. Since its permanent price drop to $399, it's been an absolute steal in the VR gaming market, even giving the Meta Quest 3 headsets a run for their money in terms of features per dollar. We've seen it drop to $299 at Walmart and Amazon before, but if I'm not mistaken, this is the first time in 2026 it's received this deep a discount.

Save $100 - This was the price PSVR 2 dropped to during Black Friday, and it hung around through December (when we still thought Steam Frame was going to launch in "early 2026"). Stock seems to be really limited at other retailers right now, but Walmart is running this deal which sees a return to the lowest-ever price we've seen on the headset.

Buy it if:

✅ You have a PS5 or PC to link it to
✅ You want great gaming features
✅ You want OLED tech

Don't buy it if:

❌ You want to be able to play on the go
❌ You want to wait and hear the price of Steam Frame

Of course, PSVR 2 can afford to drop in price while all the standalone headsets struggle due to RAM shortages. Reason being, PSVR 2 doesn't have any processing power or memory within the headset itself. Instead, it relies on the console or PC you hook it up to. It's essentially a very technically gifted display, as opposed to a computing device of its own.

In fact, PlayStation's architecture this generation is particularly futureproofed for the RAM-pocalypse, as even the PS5 shares RAM between its GPU and CPU. While that console still may come under fire from AI-induced memory shortages, it has less of a problem to solve than gaming PCs do.

And although I said it earlier today with news of Virtual Desktop opening up one of Steam Frame's most unique features to other headsets, the VR market isn't slowing down to wait for Valve. The Steam Frame could be a massive turning point in the industry if it's priced correctly, but while Valve is silent about the cost and launch date, other manufacturers have the opportunity to steal its thunder.

PSVR 2 being $100 off certainly seems as though it's trying to steal a market share. Like I said back in December (when we last saw PSVR 2 drop to this price), I highly doubt Steam Frame will be more affordable than this.

In my opinion, when it comes to gaming specs and features, PSVR 2 is far superior to the Meta Quest 3, so besides the part of me that wants to wait and see how the Steam Frame eventually compares, there's no hesitancy with me recommending you Sony's micro-OLED headset right now. If you have a PS5 or a gaming PC to link it up with, this is honestly one of the best VR headsets money can buy - especially when its $100 more affordable.

One of my earliest memories is playing SuperMario64 and wondering why the controller I held had three grips, but I only had two hands. Ever since I've been in love with video games and their technology. After graduating from Edinburgh Napier University with a degree in Journalism, I contributed to the Scottish Games Network and completed an Editorial Internship at Expert Reviews. Over the last decade, I’ve been managing my own YouTube channel about my love of games too. These days, I'm one of the resident hardware nerds at GamesRadar+, and I take the lead on our coverage of gaming PCs, VR, controllers, gaming chairs, and content creation gear. Now, I better stop myself here before I get talking about my favourite games like HUNT: Showdown, Dishonored, and Towerfall Ascension.
