A new special website for Final Fantasy 14 patch 7.5, also known as Trail to the Heavens, has gone live – and all of the exciting content teasers for the Dawntrail update have fans hoping that 8.0, the MMO's next expansion, sees a return to the familiar.
If you haven't seen it yet, the official patch 7.5 site is up, and boy, is it packing. From a bit of a deeper dive into the hotly anticipated Beastmaster job (rise up, my fellow D&D druid and Pokemon stans) to sneak peeks at new dungeons, trials, raids, and more, there's a lot to look forward to – and some of us are looking forward, erm, quite a bit ahead… to 8.0, in fact.
Its big reveal isn't set to drop until later this month at Fan Fest, but theories are theories. And they're certainly running wild now – especially those surrounding a potential return to the Void, also known as the Thirteenth – thanks to The Trail to the Heavens page. From a raid foe said to be "wielding the boundless power of the Void" to a dungeon boss that looks to be a literal Voidsent, it's not hard to see why.
Over on Reddit, folks have previously shared that they'd "like to return to the void (13th shard) and try and find a way to 'fix' it."
Not all were convinced, though. One person said it "sadly doesn't feel like it's a 'full expansion' kinda thing, feels more like a side quest at this point and time." Another argued, "I like the idea of restoring the Void, but I don't know how they could avoid it feeling like a retread of Shadowbringers."
With the new 7.5 site live, however, closure surrounding the Void seems like a possible reality for 8.0 more than ever before.
"They are really pushing Void stuff this patch," as one player puts under a new thread, after all. Another adds, "I think I'm fully on board with 8.0 being largely an Ilsabard expansion that also resolves the Void plotline."
Honestly, I'd say there's no telling what Square Enix has up its sleeve for its next expansion until it's properly unveiled. I'd love to see it myself, especially as the last bit of solid Void content came in 2023 with 6.5, but… who knows?
All I really want is something that made me feel as in awe as Shadowbringers and Endwalker did, honestly – something that's a bit, erm, better than Dawntrail. Seeing as it's got "Mixed" reviews still, I'm probably not alone on that boat, either.

After spending years with her head in various fantastical realms' clouds, Anna studied English Literature and then Medieval History at the University of Edinburgh, going on to specialize in narrative design and video game journalism as a writer. She has written for various publications since her postgraduate studies, including Dexerto, Fanbyte, GameSpot, IGN, PCGamesN, and more. When she's not frantically trying to form words into coherent sentences, she's probably daydreaming about becoming a fairy druid and befriending every animal or she's spending a thousand (more) hours traversing the Underdark in Baldur's Gate 3. If you spot her away from her PC, you'll always find Anna with a fantasy book, a handheld video game console of some sort, and a Tamagotchi or two on hand.
