Daredevil: Born Again boss Dario Scardapane has all but confirmed that Matt Murdock is going to thwart Wilson Fisk's political plans by the end of season 2. Thankfully for Vincent D'Onofrio fans, though, he also promised that it won't be the last time Kingpin and the Man Without Fear come to blows.
In a new interview with the New York Times, the showrunner said that it was always the plan to have "Part 1" and "Part 2" chart Fisk becoming mayor of New York City, and Matt (Charlie Cox) leading the resistance against his grisly, governmental gains. "That dynamic comes to a place that is inevitable," he noted, joking that he always gets himself in hot water whenever he makes a statement like that. "[But] no, it's not the end of Fisk's story in any way, shape of form."
"There are a few comic book runs that are part of the lore, and we take bits and pieces of those, mash them up and use them as inspiration. We've done that this season and last, and we're doing it in season 3," Scardapane continued. "It's all part of the larger story of Matt Murdock's struggle with being someone who has such respect for the law and breaks it on a regular basis. You know, the story never ends with these two."
Just one episode into Daredevil: Born Again season 2, and we've already seen Fisk acquiring military-grade weapons and sending his AVTF goons after the titular hero. Elsewhere, he agreed to work with Matthew Lillard's mysterious CIA operative Mr. Charles on future vigilante trials and struck up a working relationship with the organization's morally ambiguous director, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus).
Given that he admitted to have "mixed feelings" about how... relevant Born Again's themes of corrupt leadership are right now, it's no surprise that the Disney Plus show will be moving away from politics in season 3. "As it becomes almost too topical it feels like it's going away from the large, mythological genre stuff," Scardapane previously told SFX magazine. "What we're doing going forward feels more like a return to the [Frank] Miller-era comics. So yeah, it was fun to play in the realm of politics but I like something a little more street level, personally."
