The first reviews for Faces of Death have arrived, and just as we expected... they're mixed to mostly positive.
The upcoming film, directed by Daniel Goldhaber and written by Isa Mazzei, follows a young woman named Margot (Barbie Ferreira) who stumbles upon a website that appears to be recreating some of the death scenes in the original Faces of Death franchise... and it's all downhill for her from there. The horror currently sits at a 69% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 16 reviews (which makes me think the audience score is going to be much higher).
Slashfilm gave the movie a 7/10, writing that the movie is "very focused on the glut of questionable videos we're served each day," and that "the end result of all of this is a well-constructed film that leaves you feeling appropriately unclean."
Article continues belowThe Hollywood Reporter described Faces of Death as a "halfway clever retro slasher movie that, as directed and co-written by Daniel Goldhaber, actually has something on its mind." The Wrap described the movie as a "terrifying, stark, oppressive horror film that outscares the other modern slashers," and an "intelligent treatise on the grim obsession we have with being obsessively grim." DiscussingFilm called it "a bold and sinister reimagining that lingers long after the credits roll."
FandomWire was a bit less convinced, calling the film a "passable slasher film that fails to live up to its promised brutality. It suffers from its predecessor’s reputation rather than benefiting from it." Similarly, ScreenRant wrote that it's a "well-directed horror thriller with too much on its mind."
Faces of Death hits theaters on April 10. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming horror movies heading our way.
