Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 ending recap
After liberating Appa from captivity under Lake Laogai, Aang, Katara, Sokka and Sai locate the exit through a Crystal Cavern, but are cut off by Azula. Sokka takes Sai to safety, while Aang and Katara take on the lightning bender. Despite being outnumbered, Azula holds her own until a newly, er, sleeveless Zuko arrives (we get it, Dallas Liu has great arms).
After their heart-to-heart, Katara hopes that Zuko will side with her and Aang in the fight against Azula, but Zuko reverts to his old ways and teams up with his sister, initially turning his aggression towards Aang. While the four trade elemental blows, Sokka and Sai find the exit. It's blocked by a metal door, which is busted down from the other side by Toph, who has now mastered metalbending.
Aang and Katara continue to fight Zuko and Azula. Katara manages to tie up Azula with water tentacles, but Zuko frees his sister using fire whips, and the quartet swap combatants, with Katara now squaring off against Zuko. "I thought you had changed," says Katara. "I have changed," replies Zuko. You can take the man out of the Fire Nation, but you can't take the Fire Nation out of the man.
Aang tries to run down Azula using crystal armor, just like the cartoon, but is knocked to the ground. The Dai Li arrive and surround Katara. All looks lost, with Azula asking Aang, "How much are you willing to lose?" A fearful Aang says, "I won't lose anyone," before he channels his ancestors and enters the Avatar state. Aang easily dispatches the Dai Li and Zuko in a whirlwind of air, earth and waterbending.

Even Azula is no match for the power of the Avatar, as Aang is poised to put an end to the Fire Nation princess with a barrage of razor-sharp rocks. Aang's humanity prevents him from taking Azula's life, causing him to hesitate and, just like the parable of the two dragons, Azula seizes the moment to strike Aang through the chest with a lightning bolt. Aang immediately falls to the floor, and the light goes out in the spirit world with a reminder: "If you die in the Avatar state, the cycle will cease, and the world will fall out of balance forever."
Katara runs over to Aang, with Azula prepared to zap her as well. But in the nick of time, Iroh arrives to cover Katara and Aang's escape. Iroh is handcuffed by the Dai Li, and throws a judgmental glance at Zuko as he's led away. Their victory complete, the Fire Nation forces enter Ba Sing Se.
As the Gaang flee Ba Sing Se on Air Appa, Katara attempts to heal Aang using the remaining water from the Spirit Oasis. But it doesn't work, and after initially flickering back to life, Aang loses consciousness once again, his fate unclear. The season ends as Katara's pleas for Aang to wake up echo over the credits. Talk about bleak!
Does Aang die in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, and why don't the healing waters work?
The million-dollar question: is the last Airbender a gonner? It's a safe bet that Aang will survive Azula's lightning strike, but the Netflix show has just deviated from the cartoon in a major way by showing us that Katara's healing waters haven't worked. In the animated show, the season ends with Aang on the mend. That's not the case here, with Aang's fate left ambiguous. Why the waters haven't worked is also unclear for now. It's possible that they have, but the show is taking a more realistic approach to the amount of time it would take to recover from a wound like that. Or, potentially, there will be another step in Aang's recovery introduced in season 3.
Why does Zuko betray Katara and Aang in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2?
Zuko spends almost the entirety of season 2 on a journey of self-reflection and discovery. Through his relationships with several citizens of the Earth Kingdom, he learns the pain that the Fire Nation has wrought and comes to understand his Uncle Iroh's decision to turn his back on their homeland. He even takes on the mantle of the Blue Spirit to help people in need around Ba Sing Se, including Fire Nation refugees who have no love for Zuko or his family.
This journey culminates in a heart-to-heart with Katara when the pair are imprisoned together underneath Lake Laogai. During their conversation, Zuko reveals to Katara the truth behind his deepest wound: that he believes he deserved to be scarred by his father. Katara, no longer seeing Zuko as the enemy, offers to heal him using the last of her Spirit Water, seemingly solidifying an alliance before the rest of the Gaang arrives.
The push-pull on Zuko's allegiances doesn't end there, however. During a brief but impactful confrontation with Azula, Zuko's sis reminds him that their mother once told them to "stay together" and that they'd "always have each other." Finally, she appeals to Zuko's sense of duty and pride: Azula has already taken the city; Zuko can share in the victory, and the warm glow of their father, if he chooses to side with her. The mercurial Zuko eventually returns to the Fire Nation's embrace, even if it means unravelling a season's worth of self-growth.
How is Toph able to Metalbend in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2?
This is visualized a little more clearly in the animated series. Toph is able to use her seismic sense to detect earth particles within impure metals. It is these elements that Toph is able to earthbend, allowing her to manipulate the metal these particles are contained in as a result. Avatar sequel series The Legend of Korra, clarifies this further. Pure metals, like Palladium, can't be manipulated by Earthebenders with seismic sense, as there are no earth particles for them to bend. So Toph didn't technically invent Metalbending, just elite-level earthbending.
What is the Day of Black Sun, and how will it help the Gaang defeat the Fire Nation?
In episode 5, 'Ten Thousand Things', the Gaang enter Wan Shi Tong's Spirit Library in the hope of finding a way to defeat Ozai and the Fire Nation. Knowledge truly is power, because in the library, Toph learns from the spirit of Kyoshi that firebenders' powers are closely linked to the sun and celestial objects like Sozin's Comet. So while the comet greatly enhances their bending, a solar eclipse neutralizes their ability to firebend – the perfect opportunity to strike back against the Fire Nation.
Using a celestial chart in the library, the Gaang also pinpoint exactly when the next Day of Black Sun is set to happen. And while it's not revealed exactly when this will be to the audience, given how pleased everyone is by the news, we can assume the next eclipse will happen in the near future. Whether it's set to happen before or after Sozin's Comet makes its once-in-a-century fly-by will make all the difference.
Is there a post-credits scene?
Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 does not have a post-credits scene. Once Katara's sad cries start to ring out following her failed attempt to heal Aang, you can safely reach for the tissues, safe in the knowledge you won't miss anything.
Will there be an Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3?
Yes, Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 isn't just confirmed, it's already been shot! Seasons 2 and 3 were filmed back-to-back after Netflix committed to telling the full Avatar story back in March 2024, two weeks after the release of the first season. The animated series is set across three 'books' (aka seasons), and the Netflix show is adapting the overarching story of each season relatively faithfully, with season 3 set to cover Book 3: Fire. Given that filming is already complete, it's possible we won't have to wait as long for season 3 either.
