The Ghost in the Shell anime series reveals release date and promises "a new era of cyberpunk action"
A new trailer for the Ghost in the Shell anime series is here
The new Ghost in the Shell anime series finally has a release date, and it's hitting the small screen this summer.
A new trailer reveals that the show will premiere on July 7, accompanied by some exciting, action-packed footage that promises a "new era of cyberpunk action."
"In near-future Japan, where the world has become highly information-intensive, with a vast corporate network covering the planet, electrons and light pulsing through it," says the trailer. "But the nation-state and ethnic groups still survive… The offensive unit led by the full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi."
The series was produced by Science Saru, who have previously worked on shows like Dandadan, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, and Star Wars: Visions.
Based on the manga of the same name, there have been several other adaptations of Ghost in the Shell since it was first published in 1989. The 1995 anime movie is the most well-known and beloved, while a live-action movie starring Scarlett Johansson was released in 2017 to mixed reviews.
Set in the middle of the 21st Century in the fictional Japanese city of Niihama, the manga follows Public Security Section 9, a counter-terrorist organization led by Major Motoko Kusanagi. Its big-screen adaptations tend to deal with Kusanagi's dealings with the Puppet Master, a mysterious hacker that she must hunt down, and it seems like this new anime will follow suit.
The Ghost in the Shell premieres on July 7 on Prime Video. For more on what to watch, check out our guide to the rest of this year's best new anime.
