A lowkey yet playful US indie from writer-director Aaron Katz, Cold Weather sees university drop-out and Sherlock Holmes fan Doug (Cris Lankenau) get caught up in a real-life mystery when his ex-girlfriend disappears.

Enlisting the help of older sib Gail (Trieste Kelly Dunn) and friend Carlos (Raúl Castillo), Doug tries out his old-fashioned sleuthing techniques.

Unfolding in wintry Portland, this is a beautifully photographed tale, where the mystery itself is a red herring.

What really matters is hanging with these likeable characters and soaking up the melancholic mood.
