Twilight actor defends Donnie Darko sequel

Film fans collectively threw their hands into the air in disgust when S. Darko was announced. But star Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) thinks they shouldn't be so quick to judge the Donnie Darko sequel.

"Look at the original Donnie Darko. When it was first released, did anybody like it? No, it was a year later," he said.

Well, Rathbone, if we may interject for a second we liked it when it was released. We gave it five stars, in fact. But do carry on.

"Through people talking, people got it. We're in an opposite boat, because people loved the first one after a while. Maybe they'll warm up to this, too. Or, they'll hate the idea of it, but once they see it, I think they're going to turn around."

Blue Velvet 2: Bettie Booth

Perhaps Jackson hasn't seen the original Darko and doesn't realise that it's a perfect self-contained story and making a sequel to it makes about as much sense as Blue Velvet 2: Bettie Booth.

But perhaps he was speaking during a sentimental moment he was having over the fond memories he has of making the flick.

"I play this crazy character and it has to be one of the best character developments I've seen," he said "I just jumped at the chance to play it. Chris Fisher is an amazing director. [Makeup artist] Christel Edwards did this amazing prosthetic effect on me, it was so much fun. It was a month in Utah and we just had a blast [shooting] up there."

Either way, the story follows the continuing adventures of Donnie's little sister Samantha (Daveigh Chase) as she goes on a road trip to LA with her best mate, encountering strange visions along the way.

We imagine those visions will be of giant rabbits, though we're fully prepared to start a rumour that S. Darko will feature giant guinea pigs. You know, just for fun.
