Godzilla (2014)

Director: Gareth Edwards

Cast: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bryan Cranston, Elisabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe

Genre: Giant Monster Adventure

  • Billie Roy in Lee Cronin's The Mummy Upcoming horror movies coming in 2026 and beyond
  • Dune Movie release dates 2026: Every major film coming to cinemas and streaming

Plot: You know the story by now - giant monster terrorises/stomps around Japan. Humans squee in terror. But what really perks our interest is the director and cast. As Edwards' first movie since Monsters we'd be interested regardless - but it's the size and scale of the project that surprises. Equally, the thesp/proper actorly type cast - could this be the Godzilla needed to topple Cloverfiel d?

Cast: Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Lawrence

Genre: Time-travelling Superhero Adventure

Plot: Considering the cast is as long as this gallery, we're still a bit baffled as to how returning X-Men auteur Bryan Singer is going to marry both timelines (from First Class , and the previous trilogy) into one coherent story. Still, if anyone can do it, he can - and with a movie title that ties into one of the X-Men's most classic and calamitous of comic stories (the X-Men go into the future only to find a bleak dystopian nightmare), we really can't wait to see the finished result.

22 Jump Street

Director: Phil Lord, Chris Miller

Cast: Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube

Genre: Comedy

Plot: Aside from that address change (this sequel to 21 Jump Street is so-called because the base of operations is moving location… to the other side of the street), little is known about this follow-up to the unexpectedly-awesome first Jump Street. Teases co-director Phil Lord: “If the first movie is about two people getting together for the first time, this is about what happens if you try to really make the relationship work.”

Transformers: Age of Extinction

Genre: Action Adventure

Plot: It's all change for Michael Bay's fourth punt at Transformers box office success (he's been doing pretty well so far), with Mark Wahlberg, Nicola Peltz and Stanley Tucci rejuvenating the cast for an adventure that's sure to be as loud, bombastic and explosiony as Bay's best.

With initial reviews (perhaps surprisingly) positive, this complex horror may be a genre high-point for 2014.
