It is accepted that a dead style, after enough time, will become cool again - and if new Kickstarter project, Battalion 1944 is anything to go by, World War 2 shooters are the retro fad to keep an eye on.

The second game from Bulkhead Interactive (following on from last year's Pneuma: Breath of Life), Battalion draws pretty openly from the original Battlefield games, but readily namechecks Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, too. It's aiming to be a pure nostalgia trip, essentially, with all the bolt-action rifles, mud and heroic screaming that entails.

It's multiplayer-only - and Bulkhead is creating a bespoke online competition system, BattleRank, to keep a regular community interested - with a seemingly hearty disdain for recent trends. As the studio itself puts it, there's "an emphasis on raw skill. No grinding, no 'exosuits', just you and your skill as a player." Here's a trailer:
