Silent Hill 2
Horror Games Players debate characters' looks in everything from Marvel Rivals to The Witcher 3, but Silent Hill 2 devs sent them a warning 24 years ago: "Maria was sexier when we first started out, but her plunging neckline gave us too many technical problems"
Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart
Baldur's Gate The beautifully chill startup screen in Baldur's Gate 3 came "pretty late" in development after "SO MANY versions" were tested, says publishing lead
Clair Obscure Expedition 33
RPGs Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was inspired by JRPG greats like Final Fantasy, but its director loves gaming because of an old-school 1988 beat 'em up
Atsu riding her horse in Ghost of Yotei with the black bars disabled
Open World Games Ghost of Yotei's art director wanted the RPG to look like a "living painting," but the detail required stresses even me out: "When the wind blows, the trees know how strong the wind is"
Elden Ring
Open World Games Bandai Namco released a short clip of Elden Ring running on Switch 2, and if I was trying to make a reportedly terrible port look decent I'd also avoid all combat and large areas

Ghost of Yotei gameplay showing Atsu sitting on her horse between bright pink cherry blossoms, looking at a distant fortification built against a mountain
Open World Games Ghost of Yotei devs "like having a clean screen" free of mini maps and yellow paint: "Why would we muck it up with all this stuff on the screen if we can figure out other ways to guide you?"
Hideo Kojima
Action Games It's no wonder Death Stranding 2's hyper-realistic visuals are so good as Hideo Kojima shares behind-the-scenes footage from a "live-action lighting workshop" from over 2 years ago
The key art for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, showing a ghostly girl in front of a shrine, as a thumbnail, with the GamesRadar+ Big Preview Horror Special 2025 badge branding
Retro Fatal Frame's iconic camera exists to force players to "look straight at something scary" says series creator: "We thought it would really bring out the scariness of the ghosts"

Sam is a former News Editor here at GamesRadar. His expert words have appeared on many of the web's well-known gaming sites, including Joystiq, Penny Arcade, Destructoid, and G4 Media, among others. Sam has a serious soft spot for MOBAs, MMOs, and emo music. Forever a farm boy, forever a '90s kid.

Sometimes it feels like the game you're playing rushes by in the blink of an eye. But I'd wager you've never seen a blink quite so lovely as the painterly "barcodes" created by Alan Zucconi. What you see in the header image and gallery above are games, broken down frame by frame and reformed into a single, wide image - almost like a bird's eye view of playing them from start to finish.

Journey and Fez are particularly striking, and it's really neat how you can almost come up with your own retelling of the former just by the way the colors shift. I also like Titan Souls for its clear separation of fights and exploration. Fallout 4, despite its wider color palette, still looks mighty dreary, and I never noticed just how brown The Witcher 3 apparently is. Must be all the leather.

Though his works are inspired by an Imgur album that compresses famous movies into a series of vertical lines with each bar representing a frame's average color, Zucconi's game barcodes differ in that they do not focus on one single average color, but instead combine all colors into each slice. Since games are experienced differently from player to player, Zucconi sourced his data from various Let's Play videos. It sounds complicated, but it's really not. In fact, Zucconi has a tutorial on his website so you can create your own barcodes.

As for me, I just want a high-quality print so I can frame and hang it in the living room.
