In the context of a game, Achievements and Trophies are harmless. They're just carrot-dangling tactics that we're happy to indulge for our greedy pursuit of intangible virtual rewards. We wouldn't think twice about nail-bombing a kitten orphanage if it meant five more gamer points.

Tight budgets and Codemasters were to blame for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty's poor critical reception, according to Spark Unlimited producer John Garcia-Shelton.

Speaking exclusively to OXM, he explains why Turning Point wasn't what it could have been.

"We all hoped it could do well because the game has some creatively strong ideas and powerful sequences," he explains, "but we always worried that the game was not going to be competitive with titles built on two, three or four times the budget - everyone was surprised by Codemasters' front line retail pricing strategy - but even then no one thought it would be critically slammed quite so hard."

The CEO of Spark Unlimited, the developer behind upcoming FPS Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, has hit back at criticism from game reviewers, saying it is a "high concept idea" and isn't targeted at the "core gamer".

Speaking in an interview with VideoGamer.com at a preview event for Spark's new mythological FPS Legendary, CEO Craig Allen said the team did it's best to execute "with the time and money we had".

As part of an in-depth Gamasutra interview, Spark Unlimited CEO Craig Allen has been discussing the message behind upcoming alternate-history WWII title Turning Point: Fall Of Liberty, suggesting the nation-conquering storyline has messages relevant to today.

"For our team, having spent a lot of time doing WWII games... Medal of Honor was really exploring what it means to be a hero in war. Call of Duty was exploring what is that kind of personal role that somebody plays as part of a team or a squad... Maybe there's honor, maybe there's glory, but you really want to get out alive with your buddies... survival.

So with Turning Point, it was exploring what the personal choices a citizen makes due to engaged conflict and also having some fun with exploring alternate weaponries, find out where technology would have evolved with the Nazis if we hadn't interrupted their progress. How would the conflict dynamics have changed if America stayed isolated and didn't build a war machine?"

The split is pretty much 75/25 in favour of the single player mode.

In a nutshell, Epic has licensed GameSpy online tech and squeezed it into its hugely popular UE3 technology, "enabling seamless PlayStation 3 and PC online functionality. Codemasters announced today that film, television and award-winning interactive game composer Michael Giacchino will create the score for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty the upcoming alternate-reality WWII shooter in development at Spark Unlimited.

Giacchino's credits include the popular television series Lost, Alias, renowned game soundtracks for the Medal of Honor and Call of Duty franchises, as well as feature films such as Mission Impossible III, The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Giacchino last teamed with developer Spark Unlimited on the award-winning and multi-million unit selling Call Of Duty: Finest Hour game for Activision.

"I love working with Spark because they're a group that's focused on fusing innovation, quality and narrative into an intensity of game experience very few can create," stated Michael Giacchino.
