Activision wants cash for Rock Band patch

Firm believes it should be "compensated for the use of our technology"

Dec 21, 2007

It's a whole lot clearer now why Guitar Hero publisher Activision decided to block a Rock Band patch enabling support for GHIII PS3 controllers; it wants to be paid for the privilege.

Activision spokeswoman Maryanne Lataif came straight out and said it, in yesterday's Boston Globe newspaper: "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology." Activision wants (more) cash then.

The patch in question, which makes Guitar Hero III PS3 guitars work with Harmonix's Rock Band, was blocked by Activision and is currently resting under Sony's arm.

Xbox 360's Guitar Hero III controller works with Rock Band, but until individual peripherals release in the US the only way to get a second guitar for the game is to re-buy the entire $169 (£82) Rock Band pack.

You'd think Activision would see some money potential from Rock Band fans running out to buy Guitar Hero III controllers for use in Rock Band, but obviously not.

Activision subsidiary RedOctane said told 1UP earlier this month, "I don't think we're too interested in having [Rock Band's] guitars work on our game, because they're having a lot of issues with their guitars.

"From our standpoint, to be quite honest, if you know a competitor's product has issues, there's not a whole lot of motivation to make these problematic controllers work with your game. Why would you want to cause yourself the headache?"
