Resident Evil 5 – hands-on

Taking control of Capcom’s blockbuster sequel

Then again, our sympathies for the exploited locals were tested by our hands-on time, much of which was spent bricking it as ammo clips ran dry to the sound of nearby chainsaws. The enemies here retain the unpredictable charging behavior of Los Ganados, stalking you one moment and swinging for the fences the next. And when you toss in new airborne enemies – big locust-type things that swoop down from the rooftops – you end up shooting anything that moves.

This was all in co-op, of course; our wingman tasked with guiding Sheva through exposed buildings and tight alleys while we (Redfield) miserably failed to assist. Any skepticism as to the whole co-op thing, though, was pretty much dispelled by the smart back-and-forth of objectives, opportunities and peril. Smart level design means you’re often forced apart, relying on your partner to, say, unlock a door while you snipe the foes around them. Your own safety, meanwhile, is threatened by thuds and shouts from nearby rooms, with neither player given a free ride. As one player runs out of ammo, the other typically finds some; for every first aid spray you give, you’ll later need one in return. The need for cooperation is constant.

Actually, this shanty town level isn’t the best showcase of the game. It does some great things with its terrain: the pathways are crooked both horizontally and vertically, winding up and around the ramshackle houses. But the small gaggles of enemies, whose heads occasionally pop to make way for thrashing tentacles, are similar to those of RE4, suggesting that ‘angry local’ is the new zombie.

New to the TGS build was an alternate control scheme designed to ease newcomers into the action. Perhaps we’ve grappled with tank controls and general Resident Evil weirdness for too long now, but it seems a mite unnecessary. One control scheme feels as effective and intuitive as the other; the claims of Gears of War-style immediacy misleading. A far tougher sell is the continued lack of strafe abilities while aiming; an unrealistic hangover from the Resident Evil games of old.

"throwing the covers off a game that is visually beyond even Dead Rising and Lost Planet" ??Um did I miss something? neither DR or LP were anything special as far as visuals are concerned. how 'bout crysis or far cry2 or something. game looks sweet though.

The locust things sound annoying but I'm definitly going to get this game. I'm still playing RE4 after almost a year and it's still just as fun as ever. The only thing that gets me about this one is the fact the controls stayed the same. My only conplaint about the 4th was the control's didn't seem to fit in with the "Agent Kennedy; i've killed 1000 people in the last 24 hours and like jumping out of second story windows." I've never shot a gun before but I'm sure it's at least possible to walk and aim even if it does mess up your aim a little.

@defguru: Trounce RE4? No. It just MAY be better than RE4, but to say it'll trounce it is folly, sir.

And I don't care how pompous that sounds.

This franchise has been around for so long that it should be about time that they "blow us away" with a new, kick-ass game. I hope that the game lives up to it's name, it really has to.

they shoulda adopted the controls from dead space. at least the sidestepping. jesus, its about time every game had sidestepping. who wants to have to turn first.

I REALLY hope they can produce a PS3 version of this that at least MATCHES the 360 version. I am sick of inferior PS3 versions and would hate to see Resident Evil suffer a similar fate.

I love the RE Trilogies, this game looks great and scary like always. Quite a few ppl have been complaining about the voice-acting and etc. I don't care about the small stuff I just wanna pop some zombies' brains and noodles all over the screen and Fight Night Round 4 some zombies in the dirt with the maggots! Im curious is it me or does the whole village in this game look like the Feed The Children off of BET in the mornings when they advertise to get viewers to send them money? Someone please help me answer that question!
