Halo 3: ODST - multiplayer hands-on

Come for the competitive multiplayer, stay for the Firefight

With so much E3 hype surrounding Halo 3: ODST's significant solo campaign, are you worried the Chief-less entry has abandoned its original, buzzed-about multiplayer content? Fear not, frag fans. ODST has enough classic and fresh online content to clutter the cargo hold of a Covenant dropship... and then some.

The game includes two discs. One contains the new single player and the brand new Firefight co-op mode (more on that in a sec); the other features all previous Halo 3 maps - including those from standalone Legendary, Heroic, and Mythic packs - as well as three more, freshly spilled from the minds of Bungie's dedicated multiplayer design team. On a recent trip to their studio, we picked the brain of senior designer Lars Bakken, who gave us the scoop on this trio of new locales that the competitive online community will soon know like the back of their battle-scarred hands.

First up is Heretic, a much-demanded remake of Halo 2 fan fave Midship. Bakken stressed that the update was kept as “faithful as possible to the Halo 2 version,” but stated fans can also expect some “crazy bells and whistles.” Among the upgrades is an obvious increase in the overall visual fidelity and even a few eye-catching surprises, not the least of which is a menacing Covenant armada cruising by the window. Don't crane your neck too much checking out the new scenery though, as Heretic still sets the perfect stage for intense close quarters combat. In addition to the familiar layout, Midship fans will even find their favorite weapon drops unchanged.

Citadel is a 100% new map, boasting Forerunner architecture and based on part of Halo 3's campaign. The claustrophobic setting hosts a center platform - a rocket sits there to entice players to its unprotected perch - and two levels with open bays. Bakken recommended 2x2 or 3x3 Team Slayer, CTF, Oddball or King of the Hill matches to get the most bang from Citadel's arena-style set up.

The Horde-type mode is just gangster..but ultimatley, its got 2 go to gears 2...bungie has nothing on Horde

Don't know why people are calling the "Firefight' mode Horde or...Crusade?

Anyways, this is a buy for me, no doubt.

And seriously, if you don't like Halo, then don't comment. Really.

That seems like something that shouldn't be said until you actually play the game.

Can't wait for this.

Im right here with Master Chief and he got so pissed after Halo ODST was brought into play, I tried to calm him down but, he picked up my 360, so I did what any hardcore gamer would do and I grabbed a semi-automatic rifle and told him to follow me just to put my f***ing 360 down and so he did. Next, we interfered in the firefight mode and gunned down every single SPARTAN officer because Master Chief is the star of Halo and I won't buy this Halo because from the moment I played the first Halo on Xbox, I developed a friendship with Master Chief and now he lives with me but, I will sit back and wait for Halo 4 when BUNGIE puts him back to work and in the line of fire! KOWA-BUNGA!

Dude epic games ruin gears 2 multiplayer by adding the party host system. I think that it's frustrationg that when every time were about to beging the horde the freaking host leaves.

The game looks awsome but fighting covenent with out a final level seems kinda pointless.
Never the less it looks way better than MW2 I'm definately getting this!!!!

cod: world at war did it then stfu.

additionally if we are going to go into a copying whine.
everything took halos regenerating health ya morons.
fish94  - 3 months 20 days ago
@infected123
The first game with regenerating health was Wovlerine Adamantium Rage in 1994, therefore Halo took wolverine's regenerationg health concept.
LongRusty  - 3 months 19 days ago
@fish94 and infected 123
Very good point made, even Quake 3 had a power-up made for regenerating health, infact even quake 2 did back in 98, so halo's regenerating shield (back in halo 1 it was a shield that regenerated not the health) isnt that orignal.
ReCaptcha: Bevy $1,000... she's expensive!
