Just a few weeks before the show the Activision Blizzard merger became official and the new company decided it didn't want to publish the Ghostbusters game after all, leaving PAX with advertising a game that is currently "between publishers". As PAX head man Robert Khoo stated, ""We didn't have much of a choice as finding an alternate lanyard provider, so we just ran with it." The game is still expected to be released sometime in 2009 but a new publisher has yet to be announced.
Some of the titles listed don’t yet have US release dates (The Last Guy, Ghostbusters, Fatal Frame), but we’re confident they’ll be hitting our shores sooner rather than later.
"When high profile corporations merge, the innocent are often caught in the crossfire. Unsuspecting developers and PR ninjas can sometimes feel like they have no place to turn. There is one man however, who specializes in the impossible - that man is none other than Kotaku's Editor-in-Chief, Brian Crecente.

Word hit the street several days ago that Activision's once proudly touted Ghostbusters title was being dropped by the publisher. Looking to set the record straight, one PR rep (codename: Evil PR Ninja Monkey) decided to take matters into his own hands and send a preview copy (with no embargo date) to Crecente."

Activision Blizzard have held the anti-E3 by submitting their latest release schedule with no mention of forthcoming titles Ghostbusters, Brutal Legend, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, World at Conflict: Soviet Assault, 50 Cent Blood on the Sand, Zombie Wranglers, Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust, as well as several Xbox Live Arcade titles.

They have already reported that the will be scaling back operations across a handful of development studios, and this latest announcement leaves these titles in doubt.

A representative from Activision Blizzard has said "We are reviewing our options regarding those titles that we will not be publishing."

Destructoid writes: "And the E3 videos keep on a'coming. This latest footage comes from our friends over at G4, who got some time with associate producer Ryan French and the latest demo of Sierra's upcoming Ghostbusters: The Video Game (maybe no one told them we spell it "videogame" round these parts). Although it's coming out for virtually every system this demo is shown running on the game's primary platform, the PlayStation 3.

Interesting fact that's revealed during the hands-on: it turns out that the rookie Ghostbuster that you'll be controlling was actually modeled after Ryan. It may have just been a way for the studio to save money, but getting a character modeled after you is still pretty damn cool.

One feature that I found pretty interesting is that while you'll get money for every ghost you capture, you'll also get charged by the city of New York for all the collateral damage you cause. What money you get to keep after every mission can then be spent to upgrade your equipment, so it should give trigger happy players some pause before they start blowing up public buildings -- to enjoy the beautiful destruction effects -- unless they don't care about getting the latest in proton pack technology."

Gain Odgens: "Cast your minds back to when you saw that first footage of what was reported to be a brand new Ghostbusters game. It looked good but wasn't to be as the developer, Zootfly, didn't hold any rights to the license and had to can it in the end.

Early tech demos were removed at the request of Sony Pictures and all references to the game were removed from the company's website while negotiations over the rights continued behind closed doors. As it turned out Terminal Reality and Sierra were in those talks.

OXM asked Mark Randel, president of Terminal Reality, about the test footage released early last year. "They had no knowledge - we were already working on the game six to nine months at that time, and the license was either signed or about to be signed. "

MTV Multiplayer writes: "Like fellow Multiplayer reporter Patrick Klepek, I too grew up with the "Ghostbusters" films and plastic Proton Packs. So when I saw the Egon, Ray and Winston battling apparitions and making quips in the New York Public Library - all rendered on the PS3 - I was taken aback.

It was like watching a long-lost "Ghostbusters" sequel.

"Our intent was to combine the action of 'Gears of War' and the comedy [of the films]," Brendan Gross, development director at Terminal Reality, at a Sierra demo earlier this wee. "We tried to have something funny or scary every 15 feet."

Gross told me that his studio is trying to take greater care making a movie game than gamers would normally expect. "We're really moving more down that direction, especially with the generation three platforms," he said. For "Ghostbusters" specifically, he said it helped to have the development time frame that they had (they've been developing the game for over two years). And having worked on the "Aeon Flux" movie game, the development studio knows the pitfalls of trying to to have a product released in tandem with a licensed film."
Basically, it's a half a Haze.

"You know, I read the script, and it's a really good script," he said. "It's huge. It covers every possibility.

MTV Multiplayer writes: "We've seen many developers struggle with multi-platform development this generation. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are different technical beasts. Complications with the wildly popular Unreal Engine 3 middleware have made things even more difficult.

Terminal Reality, the studio behind the upcoming "Ghostbusters," spent a lot of time evaluating each console before moving forward with their first next-generation game, Terminal Reality president Mark Randell told MTV Multiplayer at a Sierra media event last month.

In the end, contrary to most teams this generation, they decided to make PlayStation 3 their lead development platform for "Ghostbusters." Here's why."

"I'm sorry to report that, unfortunately, this is not a feature of the Wii and DS version of the game," he wrote, smearing egg on VG247s faces. "It would have been really cool though."

"Definitely the action takes place in New York City and some iconic locations around there," he said enthusiastically. "But I really can't say any more with out giving too much away of the story."

However, he then proceeded to let us in to a little secret - which now isn't, obviously.

"It does stay in New York City but you do enter the other world," he said. "So it's not all in the real world."

We asked him if you enter the spirit world. And he said:

"Yes."
18th Dec, 2007

There are some things that developers and publishers just don't want you to know. And given the unnaturally high number of game announcements, hardware revelations, industry shake-ups, and all round cool things going on this year, they've wanted you to not know a lot during 2007. Thankfully though, the internet exists, and thus nothing is sacred.

That's the eternal irony of the games industry. It's a business which tries to shroud itself in secrecy, but whose patrons congregate ...
Dec 12, 2007

There's nothing quite like a comeback story to capture the imagination. In 1989, the Ghostbusters were down and out, broke and about as popular as a council health inspector about to rupture a spirit containment system.

Forced to suffer the ignominy of making guest appearances at the parties of ungrateful snot-nosed brats in exchange for a few bucks, the boys in boiler suits were about as low as they could get without actually being scalded by the Earth's ...

It's clear, then, that Ghostbusters is on the right track. It's worth coming back, however, to the tech underpinning the game once again. After all, it was largely the technology ¿ the Infernal engine that Terminal Reality has been working on for the last seven to eight years ¿ that helped convince Sierra that the time was right to do Ghostbusters. As already mentioned, the physics system is top notch, allowing for hundreds of interactive/destructible objects to be on-screen at once (and you'll even get a 'damage done' total at the end of each mission), but the engine is also capable of creating other kinds of spectacles. As anyone who has seen the Ghostbusters films would know, whenever the city is about to be swallowed into hell, huge crowds of New Yorkers turn up to cheer or jeer our heroes on, irrespective of personal danger. The game will very much pay homage to this, with a lot of activity out on the streets. One scene in particular ¿ set during the Macy's Day Parade - will feature hundreds of people walking about at once. Stress tests on the system had 3000 basic polygonal characters walking up and down a section of street.
Movie and game fans of a certain age are now buzzing from the news of Vivendis newly announced Ghostbusters game. Its a license deal guaranteed to send geek excitement alarms wailing with ambulance sirens and flashing with blue lights, but an important question must be raised. Why?

Ghostbusters is now a twenty-three year old movie, and aside from a few vague promises of a sequel from co-writer and star Dan Ackroyd and a couple of comic books, the franchise is largely dead. ...

¿ Vivendi Games, in pact with Sony Pictures, will published the game under Sierra label.
¿ Terminal Reality is developing the versions for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.
¿ Red Fly Studios is developing the versions for DS, PS2 and Wii.
¿ The story takes place in the early '90s, after "Ghostbusters II," during a new ghoul invasion of New York City.
¿ In addition to all four original Ghostbusters from the movies (Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis), supporting cast members such as William Atherton, Brian Doyle Murray and Annie Potts have signed up to provide voice and likeness for the game as well.

Variety also reports comments from Vivendi Games CEO Bruce Hack and Sony's consumer products VP Mark Caplan, a Scarface sequel in work, and several other licensed franchises in Vivendi's portfolio such as Bourne Identity, Covert One, and rapper 50 Cent.

Note: Zootfly is not developing the game as have been reported by some sources. See the first alternative source.
