Ghostbusters Patch Confirmed (News)

Almost a month after it's exclusive PS3 launch in Europe, there is finally word from official sources that a patch is in the works for Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

The game has had it's fair share of problems during it's development, with multiple publishers picking it up over the years, with the last being Sony in Europe who set it as a time-exclusive for the PS3 until October.

However, Xbox fans may never know the issues that the PS3 gamers have had to endure this last month, freezes and lockups so bad that a gamer must power off their PS3 by the rear rocker switch. Glitched Trophies that have the "Plat Club" gamers tearing their hair out, and errors when players from Europe and Australia try to play with players from the US. Not to mention issues with gamesave data not loading or corrupting.

None of these issues are mention in reviews online and offline, yet to any Ghostbuster: The Video Game owner are very common place now. This is particularly frustrating to owners as despite these glitches, it has been a well received game, scoring quite highly. Most frustrating is the lack of any official word to these troubled gamers, thankfully I have now received responses to my calls and emails and am pleased to pass onto fellow GB:TVG owner's confirmation from Andy Barnes at Sony Computer Entertainment UK and Dan Irish, CEO of Threewave Software, the company behind the Multiplayer of GB: TVG.

According to their emails, while not a definite date, it does confirm the patch is in production and could see itself being downloaded and installed on PS3's by September, almost certainly before the Xbox 360 release.

In Lyon, France today Atari has announced its fiscal results for the first quarter ended June 30. Total revenues were up 30.1% to 54.5 million euros, thanks mainly to the success of two titles: Ghostbusters: The Video Game and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

The U.S. business drove the bulk of sales with 45.5 million euros in the quarter, which is an 82% increase. This offset a nearly 49% decline in the European business, as revenues dropped to 8.6 million euros. In the U.S., Atari also noted that it saw improved third-party distribution revenues, which now represent approximately 33% of U.S. Distribution revenues (thanks to local distribution deals with ZOO Games and CDV Software Entertainment).
As a game it's far from perfect, but in a very refreshing turn of events we can confidently say that, for once, that isn't the point. ...

We're not too much a fan of beating a dead horse, but our own mistake of reporting the PlayStation 3 resolution of the Ghostbusters video game as 75% of the Xbox 360 game has been picked up around the net."

Richard Leadbetter – Director of HD consultancy Digital Foundry and author of Eurogamer's multiplatform comparison Face-off features – tweeted that playing Ghostbusters on the PS3 was like "time-warping back to the dawn of PS3 development." Ouch! That's especially painful to read considering the high hopes Terminal Reality – developers of the just-released Ghostbusters game – have for their multiplatform Infernal Engine.

Instead of leaving it up to internet Matlocks, Joystiq asked Terminal Reality to comment on the controversy. A spokesperson for the developer told them, "For the record, the PS3 version [of Ghostbusters] is softer due to the 'quincunx' antialiasing filter and the fact we render at about 75% the resolution of the 360 version. So you cannot directly compare a screen shot of one to the other unless you scale them properly. The PS3 does have less available RAM than the 360 – but we managed to squeeze 3 out of 4 textures as full size on the PS3." So: is the PS3 "maxed out"?
We asked the game's publisher Atari for comment on this issue and they sent over a response from Dan Irish, the CEO of the game's multiplayer developer Threewave Software:
After a theatrical sequel that didn’t live up to the original in many fans’ eyes, the quartet have reunited for an original videogame outing that unfolds like a third installment of the film franchise and ships today on PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 and DS. ...

Something appears to have gone a little wrong with Terminal Reality's PlayStation 3 Ghostbusters engine. At first touted as their lead platform, the native rendering resolution of the game is a little shocking.

Alarms were raised after a comparison published on website Lens of Truth. They pointed out a number of differences that put the Xbox 360 version on top, including a lower texture quality and a mysteriously blurred image. After the above comments from the developers themselves, you wouldn't expect them to shoot themselves in the foot like this. You can find the Lens of Truth comparison after this link.

What the Lens of Truth were confused about was the resolution of the game. Was the PlayStation 3 version really running in high-definition at 720p? The answer is 'No.'
GameStop managed to get Dan Akroyd to call gamers who pre-ordered Ghostbusters in full Ray Stantz paranormal mode. It's dorky, but unique way to promote the game and make sure you pick up your copy. Ghostbusters: The Video Game hits the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii tomorrow.
It's rather crummy that Atari is forcing the DRM on us PC gamers, while also giving us the stripped down version - no online multiplayer co-op (or any online activities at all!) and no downloadable content for the PC version - while PS3 and Xbox gets it all! Apparently Atari forgets that PC gaming INVENTED those features!"
The PS3 and PS2 versions of the game are due to arrive on the 19th June. Retail sources are now suggesting the game has a date on other formats including Xbox 360, Wii and PC, which will be 30th October. Quite a long wait indeed.
Atari's European operation is primarily sales and marketing, and the report is that Namco Bandai will be picking up the business, now known as Distribution Partners. The company will deal with Namco Bandai's products in Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia...."

Ghostbusters: The Video Game developer Terminal Reality has expressed frustration at publishing deals that have seen the game passed around to three different companies in the past year.

The developer admitted that it has had no say in publishing or distribution decisions, as the game has been pushed from Activision to Atari, and now Sony in Europe.

"It is not the ideal situation for a developer like Terminal Reality as we really enjoy a collaborative relationship when we work with publishers, so that has had to be rebooted every time the game changes hands," offered Brendon Goss, executive producer at Terminal Reality, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.

GameZine: Sony Computer Entertainment today signed a deal with Atari to publish Terminal Reality's Ghostbusters, making the game a PlayStation (at least timed) exclusive.

In a surprise turn of events, Sony has signed a deal with Atari to publish Ghostbusters, just one month before its release.

The game is set to release alongside the Sony Pictures Blu-ray of the original film, but now only for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2. The PSP version will follow a number of months later.

The Sony event in Sydney is still rolling on but in espionage-like movements that would put Sam Fisher to shame, the Gameplayer staff have managed to get more breaking news through. This particular announcement was left until the end, and with good reason; it's huge.

Terminal Reality used their Infernal Engine to power the upcoming Ghostbusters game, but now it seems that that same engine will go on to power even more games.

We go from hunting ghosts to...hunting bass? And deer? I guess it's pretty versatile! It was just announced that this tech powers Piranha Games' bass fishing title The Strike and their hunting title Bass Pro Shops The Strike. Both titles will be available for the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, and PC...

Target is getting more aggressive on it's video game pre-orders and offering a great deal on its in-store video game reservations. Today Target announced that it would start a new video game reservation program, to begin this weekend, Sunday, April 19th. Upcoming video game releases can be reserved when you purchase a $1 Target Reservation Card, which features a design based on the game. Although it will cost you $1 to purchase the reservation card, upon returning to purchase the game you will get a $5 Target GiftCard. It's good towards a future purchase. So it comes out to a $4 savings.

Details from Target:
"Beginning April 19, Target guests can purchase a collectible reservation card, only in stores, for $1. When they bring the reservation card back within seven days of release to purchase their game, they will receive a $5 Target GiftCard to put toward a future purchase."

Usually game box art is hit or miss as to whether or not what's advertised on the cover is in the game. The upcoming Ghostbusters game from Atari though is being straight up about it.

The Wii, PS2, and DS versions differs greatly in graphical style from the 360 and PS3 version, and the box arts for those respective versions mimic it. Even the ghosts on the E10+ Rated versions aren't as menacing as the T rated version. The It's good to see publishers taking the honest and upfront route in this case.

""We discussed this with the developer [Terminal Reality]. We all thought, 'When you have ghosts would it really make sense to have cover mechanics?' Because ghosts can go through solid objects! [laughs] So it would really kind of break the fiction that the Ghostbusters world sets up. If you went with a cover mechanic, it would make it much too similar to a real type of shooter out there. So we added the other things that would make sense. Like running really fast, having a sprint that's really accessible because they're going all over the place, and dodge mechanics because [enemies] have a lot of ranged attacks.""
One's an FPS, the other played in third-person. Slimer's residue does not 'attract the horde'. But there's no denying Ghostbusters shares some very welcome features with the 360 and PC shooter - to the extent that the same core gameplay that's been keeping the Radar team glued to its HD TVs for weeks could now be entertaining your entire family. Here are five good reasons why: ...

When a publisher drops a game, particularly a game late in development, it puts developers into a bind. They'll end up moving onto other projects while searching for someone - anyone - to come in and publish their product. Sometimes the new publisher just ends up dumping the game in stores with zero marketing. However, the upcoming multi-platform Ghostbusters game seems to have benefited from being dumped by their original publisher.

PSU reports :-

"Speaking in an exclusive interview with PSU, Terminal Reality Executive Producer Brendan Goss explains why the PlayStation 3 was chosen as the lead development platform for Ghostbusters: The Videogame and believes that the final result on Sony's console should be "amazing."

The reason why Ghostbusters: The Videogame wasn't developed earlier, he says, was because Terminal Reality were waiting for the technology to do the game justice. The PS3 was its first choice.

"Sony and the talent were adamant that before they got involved with a Ghostbusters game, the tech had to be capable of providing an authentic Ghostbusters experience, and that required graphics and physics tech," he told PSU. "

"The PS3 is a more demanding system to develop on and it is what the Infernal Engine was designed to exploit from the ground up. With the multiple SPU's it has onboard a solid multithreaded engine design can really take advantage of that and give you some amazing results."

If you happen to be in the Dallas/Lewisville, Texas area, you might want to inquire if they're still ongoing. The Craigslist posting notes that there will "several sessions over the next month both during the day and in the evening" so we'd say bug 'em. We've played it, so we'd definitely encourage you to try to do the same. It's not a paying gig, but you do get the bragging rights of having played Ghostbusters."
In that time there have been a number of videogames that attempted to bring the loveable foursome home, but none have really captured the core spirit of the films. And, it turns out, that helps explain why the game won't see store shelves until June 2008.
There are a variety of console and handheld titles on the menu, suggesting that Atari will retain a broad publishing focus going forward. We are particularly interested to see how The Chronicles of Riddick and Ghostbusters turn out, after Atari snapped these franchises up in the fallout of the Vivendi-Activision merger. "

Atari has bought rights to publish the videogame sequel to "The Chronicles of Riddick" and a new game based on "Ghostbusters" from Activision Blizzard, which declined to pick up the two projects after merging with Vivendi Games this summer."
Just a few weeks before the show the Activision Blizzard merger became official and the new company decided it didn't want to publish the Ghostbusters game after all, leaving PAX with advertising a game that is currently "between publishers". As PAX head man Robert Khoo stated, ""We didn't have much of a choice as finding an alternate lanyard provider, so we just ran with it." The game is still expected to be released sometime in 2009 but a new publisher has yet to be announced.

"When high profile corporations merge, the innocent are often caught in the crossfire. Unsuspecting developers and PR ninjas can sometimes feel like they have no place to turn. There is one man however, who specializes in the impossible - that man is none other than Kotaku's Editor-in-Chief, Brian Crecente.

Word hit the street several days ago that Activision's once proudly touted Ghostbusters title was being dropped by the publisher. Looking to set the record straight, one PR rep (codename: Evil PR Ninja Monkey) decided to take matters into his own hands and send a preview copy (with no embargo date) to Crecente."
