We absolutely know that you've been waiting with eager anticipation for a feature to come along that catalogues examples of new games that share an identical name with an old game. It doesn't happen very often, so it's genuinely exciting when it does. Anyway, we've written that feature, and this is it. Direct all messages of thanks and amazement to the comments thread. K?

Fighters Inc., a licensing organization representing boxers, filed suit against Electronic Arts in early September this year, claiming that EA illegitimately used fighters' likenesses in the summer video game Fight Night Round 4.

Now, certain Fighters Inc. boxers have filed declarations with a California U.S. District Court supporting a preliminary injunction against the game. But some Fighters Inc. boxers who signed with EA and appeared in Fight Night Round 4 are in the publisher's corner.

Heavyweight fighter Shannon Briggs, Ring Super Bantamweight champ Israel Vazquez, and former boxer Aaron Pryor are among the fighters who signed a group licensing deal with plaintiff Fighters Inc., and who are siding with the group in its complaint against EA. Fighters Inc. says its goal is to "increase the respect, presence, marketing and earning power" of its boxers.

TVGB: "With a current Metacritic average of 87 (360) and 88 (PS3), Fight Night Round 4 is a critical success. In fact, "It is our highest rated title so far this year," Eric Brown, EA's Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President mentioned during the company's Q1 earnings call yesterday. And those positive reviews have translated into sales as the latest iteration in the boxing franchise has sold over 1.7 million copies since its June launch."

"Following calls from fans critical of Fight Night Round 4's current control options, EA is bringing a free alternative - and some other new content before that.

EA Sports announced two upcoming free releases of downloadable content for Fight Night Round 4 today. The first, slated for August, will add a new gym, "new gameplay sliders" and new equipment plus an alternate version of Sugar Ray Leonard exclusive to the Xbox 360 version.

A September release may be even more well-received as it will offer face-button control for all of Fight Night's punched. That update, for PS3 and Xbox 360 will be free."

As it stands, the only way to play Fight Night Round 4 is using the analogue sticks to swing punches. However, producer Brian Hayes says "there is no option for face button punching in the final version, but we are investigating providing the option via DLC."

If he means free DLC, that would be fine. If you ended up having to pay for the option to use button-mapped controls, it's exactly the sort of thing that will whip the internet into a frenzy and unleash their hatred EA's way. To say it wouldn't be the smartest of moves would be an understatement..."
The biggest issue has been the removal of the face buttons for punching. Fight Night Round 3 allowed you a choice between using the analog stick (called TPC, Total Punch Control) or by using the face buttons of your controller."

Well I've contacted EA regarding this matter and it was remarkable how they responded.
But 42 percent have voted 'no contest' and want both boxers to appear on the front cover. So far only 14,501 votes have been lodged at the official Fight Night website, where you can also vote. "

Kotaku: GameStop managers and the odd journalist have already seen Fight Night Round 4 on the big screen, but come December 14th everyone else will get to see it too. Oh sure, we've seen blurry shaky-cam footage that in no way gives us the proper visuals to over-scrutinise and pick apart and that simply will not do. The world premiere of EA Sports' boxing franchise will hit during the Spike TV Video Game Awards next month. The "ultimate boxing match up" from EA Canada does have at least one thing going for it - the inclusion of video game boxing legend Mike Tyson. His style is impetuous! He wants to eat your children!

IGN writes: "At the GameStop eXpo, store managers and executives were shown a number of titles behind closed doors that will be coming out at the tail end of 2008 and in 2009. One of the games highlighted by EA Sports was their upcoming boxing title, Fight Night: Round 4, which showcased some of the first in-game footage seen of the title. According to N'Gai Croal on his blog, the big terms thrown out to describe the title revolved around physics-based boxing, something called "R.E.A.L. A.I.," close up boxing that was more improved than that of Round 3, and height and reach differences between boxers."
But to those who thought the series might be done in three just because EA gave the boot to the game’s developer EA Chicago, well, don’t call it a comeback, ...
