For a medium that lets us chainsaw faces off, punch presidents in their plums and slaughter endangered species, it's amazing how sensitive some of us get when developers do things we don't agree with. Certainly there have been many decisions to get us all worked up, whether it's Killzone 2's 'target footage' or Shigsy shedding that last bit of lingering dignity by playing Wii Music like a diminutive Japanese John Williams. And how do PC gamers repay the favour? Same way a lot of PC gamers always do: with mass acts of piracy.

There can only be one king of the action game genre and in the last few weeks, words have been traded between rival game developers, Tomonobu Itagaki and Hideki Kamiya. In the latest publication of Edge magazine, Kamiya states that since his last game the action genre has become stale and that his upcoming title, Bayonetta, will deliver the type of action only his team, PlatinumGames can provide. In the other corner, Itagaki-san states that Ninja Gaiden 2 is the definitive action game, that only Team Ninja can develope. So the question is, who makes the best action games? Itagaki or Kamiya?

GameDaily BIZ reports that it has received the latest Japanese video game sales data from Famitsu Marketing Data Service covering the month of February (technically the period from Jan. 28 to Feb. 24), and while the overall market was down 7.7 percent year-over-year, largely because of a 24.6 percent drop in hardware sales, software sales did increase 8.1 percent.

Leading the charge was none other than Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which racked up sales of more than 1.3 million units in its first month and broke the million mark in its second week ¿ the fastest sales pace yet for a Wii game in Japan. The popular Wii Fit took second place with over 309K units sold, and the game now has over 1.5 million units sold since last December. Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 on PS3 took third place with a respectable 275K units sold. For comparison purposes DMC4 on Xbox 360 sold 51K units.

In terms of hardware total:

Wii: 331K units
DSL: 230K units
PSP: 223K units
PS3: 89K units
PS2: 38K units
360: 14K units

In response to GamePro's article, Microsoft's global marketing director, Albert Penello, offered the following response:

"We have to disagree with your conclusion that the trend of Xbox 360 versions of games being best is changing, especially when you look at the entire catalog of multiplatform titles available. We also feel there were some key features of Xbox 360 games that deserved a little more play in your reviews. For multiplatform console owners, Achievements and Gamerscore have to be listed as an influencing factor to purchase the Xbox 360 version; their success and popularity is undeniable. The fact that other consoles have not implemented anything like this across every game should not be a reason to leave these features out of consideration. Plus, with Xbox 360 the capability for controller rumble comes standard, not as a future option and you get all the benefits of Xbox LIVE and its community of more than 10 million members.

'The cold, hard truth' is that Xbox 360 has the best games - and industry reviewers and consumers agree. Xbox 360 has more games with an aggregate review score of 90 or higher than the competition combined and multiplatform titles regularly sell better on Xbox 360. The majority of games are still lead developed for Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE simply makes games better. The competition between platforms is great for gamers and in 2008 we are going to continue to work with developers to push the boundaries of our platform and the LIVE service to make sure the best game experiences continue to be on Xbox 360."

"With the Devil May Cry series going multiplatform starting with DMC 4, everyone thought a Wii version would be released, too. As it stands, the developers have no intention of releasing a Nintendo edition of the game anytime soon, since porting it over to the Wii would mean they would have to sacrifice a lot of things.

This comes straight from DMC 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi, who says: "You know, a lot of people ask us if we are going to bring out a Wii version. I simply don't think you can make the game the type of game it is, with the awesome graphics and control - I don't think that would work on the Wii. So, I don't think we're going to bring one out, no."

"I would take that as a big, fat 'no'. Hardcore optimists may differ."

Gamespot Writes:

When Capcom announced Devil May Cry 4 was going multiplatform last year, PlayStation loyalists decried the move as a betrayal. Since its launch in 2001 with the original Devil May Cry, the franchise had only appeared on the PlayStation 2 with the fourth installment originally announced as a PS3 exclusive.

However, the Japanese's publisher's decision to release its demon-slaying game on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 has paid off. Today, Capcom announced that since its release in the US and Europe earlier this month and in Japan in January, Devil May Cry 4 has sold over 2 million units worldwide.

DMC4's rapid success makes the game the fastest-selling installment in the seven-year-old series. It also accounts for just under a quarter of the entire franchise's total of 9 million units in sales, according to Capcom. The well-reviewed game's haul is also poised to increase later this year, when DMC4 is released on the PC.

"An update for Rock Band that will make band world tour playable online"

Also of note:

"What's interesting to point out here is that OXM has apparently given DMC4 a score of 7.5, while giving The Club as score of 8.0."
If this is true, it'd be reassuring news for those who thought that we may have to wait for the inevitable Rock Band 2 before we could play in a World Tour with friends on the other side of the country.

Gamer reports: "Apparently it all has something to do with DMC4: Capcom has revealed that we Brits aren't quite as reserved as we're made out to be, after posting the results of a survey conducted as part of its Devil May Cry 4 marketing push.

As part of the build up to DMC4's launch, Capcom launched poll site setfreethedevilinside.com, and published the results of its findings today ¿ and what interesting findings they are.

Devil May Cry 4 is out today, and as you'll see from our review, is well worth a punt. Or at least, it is if you're not spending all of your spare time spanking your boss while your partner's sat at home wondering why you've not sent off your tax form yet."

You'd think there'd be a benefit after being forced to install nearly 5GB of game data, like shorter or even no loading times during the entire game.

The decision to price the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4 £10 higher than the Xbox 360 version came from retailers, not publisher Capcom, VideoGamer.com has learned.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, a spokesperson for Capcom said: "We don't set the prices of our games, that's at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control."

Gamasutra reports this week's top rental charts from U.S. game rental company GameFly, representing the most requested games for the week ending January 21st, highlight both to-be-released and already released games in a unique demand-specific chart.

Burnout Paradise hangs on to the top spot for the second week in a row. Capcom's Devil May Cry 4, slated to release February 5th, made the top five twice last week --the Xbox 360 SKU in second position, and the PS3 SKU in fourth -- but this week, the Xbox 360 SKU steps back a spot to third, while the PS3 SKU fails to chart in the top 5.

What follows is a breakdown of the top titles requested by GameFly subscribers across each of the major platforms:

Xbox 360

1. Burnout Paradise (Electronic Arts)
2. Turok (Touchstone)
3. Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)
4. The Club (Sega)
5. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 (Ubisoft)

Nintendo Wii

1. No More Heroes (Ubisoft)
2. Endless Ocean (Nintendo)
3. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Nintendo)
4. Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo)
5. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Sega)

PlayStation 3

1. Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)
2. Burnout Paradise (Electronic Arts)
3. Turok (Touchstone)
4. Unreal Tournament III (Midway)
5. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (Sony)

Some consumers in Europe and Australia might have noticed it already. The Xbox 360 version of Devil May Cry 4 is a bit cheaper than the Playstation 3 version in all of the PAL-areas. The Xbox 360 version has a suggested retail price of €59.99, compared to €69.99 on the Playstation 3. Dutch website PS3Only contacted Capcom for an explanation:

"I didn't realize we were the only publisher doing this. In actuality, it's not that the PS3 version has been made more expensive, but that our business model has allowed us to discount the Xbox 360 version."

This is especially strange, considering the price of both version in America en Japan is exactly equal.

While North America prepares for the launch of Turok and a handful of new Bomberman titles, the majority of this week's release activity centers around Japan, which will see numerous big-name debuts and sequels in the coming days, including Devil May Cry 4, Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi, and Dairantou Smash Brothers X.

Some of these new features include; 5.1 LPCM audio, PSN support, and the option to install data to the hard drive. Apparently though, game data takes up 5GB of storage, but on the bright side of things, it removes all load times in the game.

PlayStation 3 isn't the only system getting some bundle love from Capcom. Microsoft Japan announced today the Xbox 360 Devil May Cry 4 Premium Pack, a hardware bundle that combines the 360 with the latest installment of Capcom's dramatic action hack-n-slasher.

The Japan-only bundle includes a Xbox 360 Standard Model, which is the Japanese version of America's Premium Pack, complete with a 20 gigabyte hard disk, wireless controller, media remote, HD AV cables and LAN cable. All hardware units in the bundle will have HDMI ports, so you'll get to experience the included retail copy of DMC4 in digital bliss.

All this in a special DMC4-themed box, for just 37,800 yen ($ 331, € 230)! In addition to being a 4,000 ($ 35, € 24) yen discount over buying the system and game separately, this price is exactly 10,000 yen ($ 88, € 61) less than the recently announced PS3 bundle, providing some incentive for DMC fans to jump in.

"We really should hate attending the Jump Festa videogame and comic show. But the promise of Square Enix titles making their playable debut is way too much to pass up."

"At this year's event, open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, Square Enix was once again the main attraction for the videogame crowd. With the promise of playable debuts for the Final Fantasy fighting game for PSP, Final Fantasy: Dissidia, the new DS Kingdom Hearts, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, and the new mobile Final Fantasy IV spinoff, Final Fantasy IV: The After."

"This year's showcase had Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy XIII sandwiching short clips of the Parasite Eve mobile sequel and the Blu-ray version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children."

In addition, Sega, Capcom, Bandai Namco, Nintendo, and Microsoft all have booths at the Jump Festa this year. 1UP's report briefly covers all of them.
A couple weeks ago, we ran a preview of Devil May Cry 4 that mentioned offhandedly that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, based on our brief time with them, looked and played identically. Unsurprisingly, this prompted a few readers to crawl slowly out of the woodwork, chanting in arcane rhythms about "framerate" and "processing power" and "memory" and generally calling bullshit on our assertion. Having finally received near-complete versions of the game from Capcom, ...
Although it was originally planned as a PS3 exclusive, some may find it startling that development wasn't even started using any PS3-related equipment. Development began and grew using a PC engine.
Recently, we got our best look yet at exactly what sets these two eerily similar heroes apart.

You'll play as Nero for about 60 ...
The promised PS3 and Xbox 360 Devil May Cry 4 demo will be out in early 2008.

The first details have emerged on the pre-release demo of Devil May Cry 4... though we don't have a clue when or where it's going to hit.

The ten minute demo is a mish-mash of portions from Devil May Cry 4's story; including cut-up sections from Fortuna city as well as a bit from that icy level we've seen a thousand screenshots of.

Excitingly a boss character called Berial is also said to feature. Oh Capcom, you're spoiling us!

Speculation did kick off on the net that the DMC4 ...

"Could a Devil May Cry 4 demo be coming to the Xbox360 and Playstation 3 in December? Two days ago JeuxFrance.com reported that a demo would be coming out exclusively for the Xbox360, since this was the only console mentioned in the latest issue of Famitsu. However, a known Capcom representative has posted on the Capcom forums stating that this is untrue."

Good news tin fans - Capcom sends word that a three-disc Devil May Cry 4 Collector's Edition will be in the shops in time for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases.

This $79.99 (£38) edition comes complete with a documentary-packed bonus DVD and the first volume of the Devil May Cry animated series (four episodes, apparently) which we're concerned might suck, but who knows. Fans of the Devil May Cry series will be overjoyed to hear that two of the series best - and sexiest - characters are making a triumphant return in Devil May Cry 4. Devil May Cry 4 is just gorgeous. Really, watch the trailer and see - it's a glossy, smooth and slick actioner that, visually at least, is the very definition of what a hi-def videogame should be. There's plenty to get on with here, including a peek at Dante kitted out with the Gilgamesh gauntlet weapons.

Which surprised us, really, since we were under the impression that only new man Nero would get his hands on the fresh gear - Gilgamesh, Lucifer and Pandora's Box. Now we're ...

The highly anticipated Devil May Cry 4 immerses gamers in a gothic supernatural world, where a new protagonist clashes with series mainstay Dante. As new leading man Nero players will be able to unleash incredibly powerful and stylish attacks and non-stop combos using a combination of the Devil Bringer arm and the Exceed system, both of which are new gameplay mechanics for the series. Fans of Dante won't be disappointed as he too will be playable during the course of the game.
We loved Devil May Cry 3's demon killer, Lady. After all, what man could possibly resist a woman that can cartwheel through the air while shooting guns from both hands. We're absolutely made up, then, that this hot femme is set to make a return in Devil May Cry 4. And she's had a makeover.

As you can see from the side-by-side comparison below, Lady has ditched the moody school girl with a missile launcher image in favour of a more mature, yet sizzlingly sexy look. The straining, ...
Want to see more Devil May Cry 4? Point your eyes downwards for the latest trailer, which features more spectacular in-game action alongside some new cutscenes. There's a little blood, a lot of fire and bucketloads of stylish combat. It's great to see the familiar 'guns pointed skywards' combo play of the original still going strong.

Once you've played the video (a few times, probably), head over to the images tab and take a look at the new shots. ...
