PSBlog:
'The same day Jeff hit up Seth Killian to talk Super Street Fighter IV inside Capcom's US HQ, I sat down with Senior Producer Morgan Gray for some quality time with Dark Void. This was the first time I've seen the game running in action on PS3, and Morgan was kind enough to walk us through a hefty chunk of jet-packing, on-foot shooting and unique "vertical combat" - the three key components that make up Dark Void's unique blend of third-person action.

Dark Void's due out on January 19, but for now, there's plenty of footage to peep below.'
Dark Void's Delay Explained: Hint, It Has to Do With Hover (News)

Capcom's alternative history Sci-fi shooter wasn't pushed back to early next year out of fear of the competition, it was to add a new feature to the game, Shana T. Bryant, Capcom associate producer, told Kotaku.

"The main reason we delayed Dark Void was because we really wanted to spend the extra time we needed to repolish it and add a new feature," she said.

The feature? Hover up, something that was added into the game just a week ago.

Allowing the character's rocket-pack sporting hero to not only fly through scenes, but also hover up and around environments adds a new element of strategy to the game.
Dark Void is a third-person shooter, a radical departure from the titles Airtight Games is used to working on. Gaming Union caught up with Jose Perez III, the Creative Director of Airtight Games to find out what the developer is planning to implement in Dark Void in terms of replayability."
The jetpackery? Still breathtaking. The vertical cover system? Still brilliant. The visual presentation -- well, you get the picture. Needless to say, Capcom hasn't taken any of the previously seen awesome stuff out of the build we just played -- but they've added more than a few subtle differences that caught our eye and quickened our pulses."

Kotaku: "Airtight Games still has time to wrestle with an apparently common problem: gamers not using all of their abilities in a game.

One of the themes of my day yesterday was the idea that gamers often ignore or under-utilize the abilities that games give them.

This is common. Or at least it seemed so yesterday."

Capcom has released a fresh concept image for its upcoming action title Dark Void, due out on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC later this year.

The concept art features an image of the USS Cyclops, a real life ship that vanished without a trace in the Bermuda Triangle in 1918. To view the image, click here.

"Dark Void, as you already know, takes place in, well, the Void. Getting to the Void is something that usually doesn't happen on purpose... Since you well know there's a ton of mysterious disappearances near the Bermuda Triangle, and lots of conspiracies and myths surrounding that area, you may expect to find pieces of real history that have traveled through the Bermuda Triangle into the Void. " said a Capcom representative.

Joystiq recently played Dark Void again at CES in Capcom's suite at Planet Hollywood. They're not going to bore you with the details, as they'd probably be the same glowing ones they dropped on you during last year's E3. Graphics look even better, jetpacking around is still ridiculously enjoyable, etc.

But they simply had to pass on one of the new bits that Capcom told them as they attempted to wipe the stupidly giddy smile off their faces post-demo: They've added guns to the jetpack. Do you get what Joystiq is saying here? They took the most awesome invention since the light bulb, the jetpack, and bolted weapons to it. Besides tearing the space-awesome continuum to shreds, it also means man-on-alien-saucer dogfights are a possibility.

"A lot of other companies are like, 'Make it just like the last game that came out because it sells well worldwide'," lead designer Jose Perez told journalists at Capcom's Captivate 08 event in Las Vegas last week. "Capcom is known for innovation...and I just want to see their logo come up before our game."

An interesting side story in Dark Void's creation is that it sees a family of figures who worked on Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge for Microsoft Game Studios brought back together nearly five years after the game shipped on Xbox."

It was a surprise because it was being shown so early, but mainly because of how darn good it looked. Once you have, you'll find yourself immersed in a beautifully crafted alternate world where planes ruled instead of cars and a storyline that brought the gee-whiz sense of adventure so prominent in old westerns to a gaming ...

According to Dark Void’s storyline, the true nature of the gods is quite removed from the sugar-coated version used to keep church donation boxes rattling. We've made some changes to 1UP cover stories in recent months, and this is the first one that reflects a lot of what we're trying to do with them -- focusing on big reveals, innovative and creative games, and nontraditional types of coverage. We have plans in the works that I'm super excited about for the next few of these -- and if you're wondering, yes, we're back on a one-a-month schedule now -- but that's enough advertising. Which was a real shame, since it was very good indeed.

It's difficult to extrapolate the story, feel and impact of a game you've only seen running in trailer form. But we'll give it a go. Fortunately, Dark Void appears to be the sort of experience you can amusingly call 'WYSIWYG'. Because 'what you see is what you get' doesn't sound funny enough.

At its Gamers Day event in London this week, Capcom announced Dark Void, an original IP developed by Airtight Games for undisclosed platforms. Airtight Games was founded in 2004 by many of the key developers behind Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge for Xbox, and also boasts Ed Fries, former VP of game publishing at Microsoft, as a co-founder.
As indicated by the leaked information on Wednesday, the brief trailer shown for Dark Void at the event depicted both sci-fi combat flight sequences and third-person action/shooter scenes, often with the main character utilizing a jetpack to navigate gravity-challenged environments.
