So what would happen if amoral Balkan sociopath Niko Bellic was in everyone's favourite cute and cuddly cartoon racer? Would Mario and chums accept him into the line-up with grace and humility? Would Niko keep the lid on all his murderous rage when Yoshi was firing red shells up his tailpipe? Of course, not. This is what would happen if the worlds of Liberty City and the Mushroom Kingdom clashed...

And that got us thinking.

Speaking to develop in an interview published today, Ward explained that Blur will be getting DLC updates, but Bizarre is not looking to replicate Criterion's DLC policy.
Shane Kim, Microsoft's corporate VP of strategy and business development in the games group (he must need oversize business cards!) has said that existing games can be patched for Natal: "You can take an existing game, and make it work". And he held up Burnout Paradise as a game that Microsoft had done this to: "It's a great example of just how simple it is to adapt a game".

Operation Burnout reports that on Xbox Live you can now purchase and use cars that were not originally slated for release today. In addition to the Legendary Cars that were scheduled for release today, The Toy Cars pack, the Boost Specials pack and the Time Savers Pack are also available for purchase.

Criterion Games have confirmed that this was a mistake on the part of Microsoft and that they had no intention of releasing the additional content today. Matt Webster from Criterion Games has stated on his Twitter page that "we're not happy with Microsoft (again)".

We'll keep you updated as to the availability of these cars on PS3.

**UPDATE***
Microsoft has corrected the error and removed the additional updates from Xbox Live. Those that got the updates while they were still available will be able to continue using them.

"Gamasutra's weekly column, "Saling The World", covers the top five sellers for every available platform in the United States, Japan, and Europe, providing an important update of sales patterns worldwide.

This week's charts, with data taken from February 5th, 2009, find Halo 3 and Call of Duty: World at War at the top of North America's Xbox 360 software sales charts, while Star Ocean: Second Evolution and Mario Kart DS drive sales on portables.

Data for "Saling The World" comes courtesy of the public sales information on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and Amazon.co.jp, with sales split out for each platform and territory, and pre-orders disregarded. This results in a true sense of what games are selling worldwide on the real-time updated service, as follows..."

GamersDigest can confirm that the 1.60 patch is now out for Burnout Paradise, coming in at 254MB.

There is a techincal issue with the ingame browser on the PS3 and PC versions of the game, here is the fix;

If you update the game today to version 1.6, you'll experience a white screen issue relating to the pages we've created for the in-game browser. The text will read "Error. FW-1 at fefw01_ixe-lhr: Failed to connect to the WWW server".

On PS3, hit triangle and then "EXIT", then choose "Yes" to "return to the game screen" and continue playing Burnout. On PC, click the button prompt in the bottom right of the screen to exit and continue playing.

The full list of additions after the jump.
411mania's Release List for the Week of February 2, 2009 (News)

411mania gives a rundown on this week's game releases. Highlights include Tenchu: Shadow Assassins, My World, My Way, and Another Code: R.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins (Wii)
"New to the series is a feature called 'Mind's Eye' which allows you to quickly and easily find your enemies on screen and also see what's in their current field of vision. This makes it easier to gauge where you can safely go to avoid discovery while creeping up on your unsuspecting victims. You can also use 'Mind's Eye' to find out what can be manipulated in the area, which means you no longer have to play the guessing game when it comes to finding which flames can be blown out, what objects can be moved, which doors can be opened, etc."

My World, My Way (DS)
"One of the unique features of this game is Elise's ability to change the world around her by pouting. Many objects in the world such as landscapes, shop items, monster stats, and drops are subject to her wants and desires. Of course, you need special points to use the power of the pout, so don't expect to be bossing everything around without limit. You can also look forward to a lot of humor relating to many of the RPG clichés that fans of the genre have had to put up with over the years."

Another Code: R - Kioku no Tobira (Wii Import)
"The first Trace Memory is one of the more memorable first-run DS games thanks to its original and engaging story, decent puzzles, and good use of the DS' features. If history repeats itself, the sequel will be one of the few Nintendo published Wii games that makes good use of the Wii's many unique features without having that 'tacked-on waggle' feel that we've come to expect from most of the system's games."

Along with the announcement of the upcoming DLC, Criterion talked about a good bit of free DLC "all wrapped up in our new, more vibrant visuals". Does this mean we'll see yet another graphical upgrade for Paradise City? (The first upgrade was to maximize the resolution of SD TVs.)"

In a trailer released yesterday for Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Criterion has hinted that police will be returning to Burnout in a future DLC pack.

At the sixty second mark the trailer shows Burnout Paradise's new 'Burnout Store' with a mouse hovering over a button marked with a PCPD badge, which we presume to be an abbreviation of Paradise City Police Department. Underneath the button are the words 'Coming Soon'.

Criterion plans to release Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box on Xbox 360, PS3 and - for the first time - PC from 6th February.

Inside is the full game plus all of the free updates so far, including the Bikes Pack, Codename: Cagney Pack, Trophy support and much more.

The brand new premium Party Pack will also be stuffed in. This goes live independently on Thursday 5th February, but has yet to be given a price.

The Party Pack adds an offline pass-the-pad-style multiplayer mode for up to eight people. This picks players at random and assigns them a variety of tasks, such as landing barrel rolls, surviving oncoming traffic or simply beating a time while racing around at track.

Coinciding with the launch of the Party Pack will be a free update adding things like an in-game website and store to Burnout Paradise - plus overhauls for various modes, visuals and the entire vehicle dynamics system.

Criterion tells us the patch will be "massive", but Eurogamer heard that one before.

After the insane amounts of free Burnout Paradise DLC that Criterion has released, it's hardly surprising that the developer has decided to get paid for its next batch of downloadable treats.

The upcoming Big Surf Island update for the ball-out racer was previously touted as free content, like previous DLC packages, but Criterion has confirmed that it will instead be "premium paid-for content".

It didn't reveal a price, but to be fair the update looks bloody brilliant so we wouldn't mind handing over a few quid.

Details are skant at present, since the car is due for release in 2009, but we do know a few things about it already. And the sheer speed of this vehicle is one of the talking points..." - excerpt from PS3 Attitude

"We're finally ready to unveil the first in a wide range of new Burnout Paradise content for 2009.

Our first pack of the year will be called Burnout Paradise Party.

Burnout Paradise is an awesome social game, but the action's all online. With Party, we wanted to create something for when all the players are in one place – gathered around a single screen.

Fans of the classic Crash Mode from Burnout 2: Point of Impact will know that this is not the first time we've done something like this. And we hope the response to Party is as warm as it was for Crash mode.

So, if you like to get together and play games, it's time to break out the drinks, party hats and balloons!"

Checked out CriterionGames.com recently? You might have noticed that they've completely revamped the site. Not only does it look swish and sexy, but it harbors some interesting information about upcoming Burnout Paradise content. You know, that game which came out in January but which people are still playing today? The game that's had copious amounts of free downloadable expansions and which was the first third party disc-based title to patch in trophies?

Four new expansions are listed on the "coming soon" section of the new Criterion Games website. While at the moment they're simply numbered packs, they will be unveiled, one by one, over the next four fridays, starting on October 31st. The only other information we're given about these packs is that we expect to see them arrive in Spring 2009. So after all this year's great games are played and forgotten, we're convinced we'll still be playing Burnout Paradise well after a year since release.

We'll keep you informed as and when these expansion packs are unveiled.
Indirectly, however, the evidence is coalescing right in front of our eyes.

Earlier this month, GamePro reported that Criterion Games was releasing a rather robust--and rather free--motorcycle upgrade for the months-old Burnout Paradise. While the upgrade was great for gamers, one source at EA told GamePro that the move was more a counterattack against used game sales, than it was to satisfy fans of the series.
It turns out the game is still aware of your awards, but there is a bug with displaying the correct amount.

The team at Criterion Games is aware of the issue and should be releasing a patch to correct it shortly. Read the original post after the jump.

"We're finally able to announce that our latest free downloadable Burnout pack bikes will be out 18th September!!!

It's tough to give specific dates on downloadable content, because we don't know for certain until the last minute. But hey, we're really excited about bringing bikes to Burnout, so we're going to take a chance and tell you that we're aiming for September 18 – that's this coming Thursday!"

"We're working flat out to bring you yet another free content pack for Burnout Paradise – and this one's the Bike Pack!

If you missed our recent posts, we're trying something new with downloadable content this year. We want to completely change the game we brought you back in January with regular game changing updates. That means more than just a couple of cars and a new level.

For the first time in a Burnout game, we're bringing you motorcycles. We've already talked about the 2 bikes available from Day 1 and some of the bike-specific gameplay that's on the way, but there's more to this pack than that. We're introducing night time to the streets of Paradise City and with it, some unique gameplay."
The map isn't big or detailed, in fact it's pretty blurry and small, but you can still get an overview of the size of the place.
But those who get a particularly sick kick out of seeing road-rashed riders are in for a disappointment: According to MTV Multiplayer, whose Stephen Totilo recently got some hands-on time with the update, human bodies won't be receiving that same level of patented Burnout damage during wrecks as car bodies do.

Kotaku: Criterion is now "aiming," as it says, for an early August release for its long-awaited "Cagney" update to Burnout Paradise on Xbox 360. The developer had originally announced a July 10th release date, but now says August 4th is the "EARLIEST" (caps Criterion's) that it can be expected to be available.

The update rolled out onto PS3 on time, marking almost an entire month's delay for Xbox 360 users. "We're in the final stages of testing the revised version and will announce a concrete date as soon as we have one," wrote Criterion on its developer blog.

Criteriongames reports:

The 3rd and most ambitious FREE software update for Burnout Paradise will arrive later than expected for Xbox 360 players.

We've picked up some additional bugs in our final test phase for the 360 version of Cagney and will delay until these issues are resolved.

We're unable to give an exact timeline for release, but as soon as we have confirmation, we'll post here on the criteriongames.com. For the moment, we're expecting this to have an impact of around a week-and-a-half. Right now, we're looking at 24th July as a projected date.

Big thanks to Microsoft for picking up these last few bugs. Nothing's more important to us than Burnout fans getting a great service, which is why we won't pull the trigger on Cagney until we're happy that it's bug-free.

The Cagney update is our first major content-based release. It contains 3 all-new game modes and 70 new challenges featuring multiple parts, timer and leaderboard. We're also bringing new cars and designs, live broadcast gameplay through calendar and the best of the blog through our live front page plus a mountain of additional revisions and fixes.

It's an ambitious and complex overhaul of Burnout Paradise, and it's this scope that's caused a few last-minute delays. We'll bring you more news as we have it.

An in-development version of Burnout Paradise showing Paradise City going through its day-night cycle - a feature that will be coming to the game in August 2008 in the Davis update.

As many guessed, this was a special version of the game that we locked to the real-time clock so that everyone playing through the night could see the time of day change in Paradise City as they played. In the final version of the game we expect to have an accelerated day-night cycle.

Because of the fantastic response, we've decided to leave the webcams running for another night for everyone to enjoy. And, also, here is a shot of the city as night falls at around 10pm...
