Boom Blox

Spielberg's Wii game revealed

It may not be what you were hoping for, but booming those blox looks like a lot of fun.

It's always a tense moment when a film-maker announces a videogame project. Sometimes very good things happen, but sometimes very Jericho things happen as well. So while Steven Spielberg has a respectable track record with these things (See the early days of Medal Of Honor), last year's announcement that he was working on a Wii game caused the furrowing of many a brow. Particularly when we found out that it was going to be a casual-sounding affair involving building blocks. Just what the Wii needs...

But now EA has thrust Boom Blox out into the open, and aside from the horribly trite "down wit' da kidz" spelling of the second word, it actually looks really rather promising. From what we can glean by squinting at the trailer and applying our finely honed journalistic investigation skills (Read: guessing), it appears to be a Frankensteinian splicing of Jenga, Lego, Domino Rally and Garry's Mod. In other words, it looks like you'll be using bricks with a variety of different properties to build things up and then blast them to pieces. With a slick-looking physics engine and the promise of comprehensive construction tools and online level-sharing, it could turn out to be a hell of a lot of fun, provided there's enough to do.

There's also apparently a mobile version on the way, though given the obvious technical limitations that could turn out to be less fun. Check out the trailer for the Wii version and see what you think.
