Unreal Engine 4 games coming 2013, Epic to lead with own titles

Unreal Engine 3 has completely dominated the middle-ware (software created to help developers create games) market since it debuted on the scene with the original Gears of War. Dozens (if not hundreds) of games have utilized UE3, making it something of an industry standard.

Its successor, Unreal Engine 4, is drawing eyes not just for its capabilities, but also because it will almost certainly become the new standard within a few years, which has a large effect on the direction of the gaming industry.

What really matters though is the games. And today Joystiq published a video interview with Mark Rein, a vice president at Epic, in which he says we'll definitely be seeing Unreal Engine 4 by the end of next year.

"For sure something next year, I just don’t know exactly when,” Rein said. ”Until we’re really clear on when the game is going to be finished, when the partner wants to put in the sand and market it, we don’t really have those kind of dates.”

He also remarked that Epic themselves will be leading this pack with their own titles. "It’s certainly important for us to have our flagship game. That’s the game for which we develop the engine. Gears of War was the game for which Unreal Engine 3 was developed, and so shipping that has a huge significance for licensees and for us. I think, for Unreal Engine 4, there’ll certainly be a couple of games.”

Which games will these be? Likely not Gears of War, considering Judgment has already been revealed. Maybe a return to Unreal Tournament? Or perhaps Fortnite?

Please let then return to Unreal Tournament.

Never played any of the Unreal Tournaments, and I'm not particularly fussed about FortNite. I WOULD, however, like to see something not dissimilar to the trailer as a game- y'know, something awesome and fantasy-RPG-ish. Although, I don't particularly see Epic doing that, even if that WAS what they chose to show off UE4 with. ReCAPTCHA: Luminous Pissing. There are no words.

    A console Infinity Blade maybe?

For Epic's next game, I'd expect it to be something that can show off the new abilities of Unreal Engine 4, specifically the new lighting and particle effects as well as being able to render detailed, wide open vistas. I wouldn't be surprised if Epic announced a game that involves magic and the elements (the particle effects could lend themselves quite well to a fantasy/RPG setting) and although it might be a bit too ambitious for a new IP due next year (I bet the game being released in 2013 is FortNite), there will probably be an open world game at some point. I'd expect there to be a new Unreal Tournament at some point, too.

How about just a new IP?

If it's coming next year then it's the PC Exclusive they've been talking about for awhile now. Current consoles can't possibly do what is in the Elemental video. They've been trying to hype their PC Exclusive for awhile now and they did say it was an Unreal Engine 4 game. Hopefully it's Unreal Tournament without all the casual crap that's in FPS Games. Back to the roots of Arena Shooters, none of this Gears of War influence that Unreal Tournament 3 had.. Just straight up pew pew in an Arena.

It has been so long since a top class arena shooter has been made I really hope that is something they consider going back to. I would be happy with a simple remake of UT99 really. I never really liked any of the UT games after that, they never really felt right.

Hopefully something with colors other than brown and grey with splatters of red.

Yep, It's going to be a PC exclusive so finally we will have a fun game to play without having it to look crap just so it could run on weak, outdated consoles...
