UK Torchwood Screening Date Confirmed
Finally we have a date for Torchwood in the UK. According to The Doctor Who News Page , the BBC has confirmed that Miracle Day will premiere on BBC1 and BBC1 HD on Thursday 14 July at 9:00pm. That’s six days after its US premiere on Starz. Which seems a bit silly to us, but there you go…

Toy Story 4
Tom Hanks may have just let the cat out of the bag. The actor appeared on the BBC Breakfast show to promote his new film Larry Crowne , but the couch interrogators threw in a Toy Story question to test the water. It was then that Hanks let slip a little too much: “I think there will be yeah. Yeah, yeah. They’re working on it now . There you go.” If anyone could say it, would be Hanks, but will Pixar be milking the franchise with a fourth or will the good times continue to roll?

Xerxes Changes Name
The 300 sequel/prequel/whatever formerly known as Xerxes now has a new name, and nearly a new director, according to Deadline . The producers have renamed it 300: Battle of Artemisia , and Deadline reckons that Warners has narrowed the list of potential directors down to two. Zack Snyder, who helmed the original, was due to have called the shots on Xerxes – sorry Artemisia – too, until Warners gave him a Super offer he couldn't refuse. Apparently, Snyder and his producer wide Debra Snyder have been closely involved in the director selection process for the new film, which is once again based on a Frank Miller graphic novel (and presumably having seen The Spirit , they ruled Miller out of the running pretty damned fast). Miller’s tale recounts the story of how Persian leader Xerxes became the god-like entity we saw in 300 . The two directors in the frame are Noam Murro (who helmed Sarah Jessica Parker-starrer Smart People ) and Jaume Collet-Serra ( Unknown – we mean he directed the film Unknown , not that we don’t know who he is…).

GI Joe 2 Adds Cast
Rapper RZA (Robert Fitzgerald Diggs to his mum) and DJ Cotrona (who isn’t a DJ, but an actor who appeared in Venom ) have been cast in the GI Joe sequel that’s being directed by the guy who gave the world that Justin Bieber popumentary, Never Say Never , John Chu. According to The Hollywood Reporter RZA is playing Blind Master (who trained both Snake Eyes and Jinx) while Cotrona is playing helicopter pilot Flint.

“I Reanimate Dead People”
Sixth Sense ’s Haley Joel Osment will soon be reanimating dead people. He will play Victor Franklin in Wake The Dead , a modern version of the Frankenstein tale based on a graphic novel by Steve Niles ( 30 Days Of Night ), reports Variety . Not to be confused with The Casebook Of Victor Frankenstein (Timur “ Wanted ” Bekmambetov’s proposed prequel based on the Peter Ackroyd novel), This Dark Endeavour (Summit’s in-development Frankenstein prequel based on the book by Kenneth Oppel), Frankenstein: Prodigal Son (an adaptation of author Dean Koontz’s modern day take on the story), I, Frankenstein (Lakeshore’s long-in-development adaptation of the Darkstorm comic book) or Frankenstoned (an idea the SFX team came up with down the pub after far too much cider).

The Giver
Variety reports that Bridges and producer Nikki Silver have purchased the rights to the 1993 young adult science fiction novel The Giver by Lois Lowry story and that Bridges may play the title character. Set in a distant future, the book is about a society in which human emotion and human history have been eradicated. Only “the Giver” knows anything about the past. A 12-year-old boy, Jonas, is destined to become the next Giver but the more he learns the more his world is turned inside-out. “I originally thought of the role of the Giver as a vehicle for my father, the late Lloyd Bridges,” says Bridges, “however, at 61 years old I feel the time is right for me to do it.” He’s clearly been thinking about this for a while…

Carey Mulligan Goes Outback
The greatest Doctor Who companion who never was, Carey (“Blink”) Mulligan*, will be making a return to our genre with a sci-fi film in Australia called Outback , reports Variety . Apparently Gary ( Pleasantville , Seabiscuit ) Ross will be directing after finishing The Hunger Games , but there are few plot details at the moment.
(*Yeah, yeah, we know that on any other site she’d be introduced as “Oscar nominated for her role in An Education ” but she’ll always be Sally Sparrow to SF fans.)
