The dream sequences in Max Payne.

Snake's playable dream sequence in MGS3 freaked me out at first because I first encountered it when I popped the game in after not having played it for like a week and a half. I almost ejected the disk to make sure there wasn't some game I'd never heard of in the disk tray.

I was actually playing Lego LOTR with my little brother the other day and during us wandering about middle earth I ran into where Sauron's gaze was resting and the entire screen was suddenly filled with his eye and that god-awful hissing noise. Scared the bajesus out of us, neither of us were expecting anything along that caliber, especially while walking around on the world map. Then there's the asylum in Thief. I never played the originals so I don't know if they were "scary" but goddang that part of the game was frightening. And very sudden, to me.

2 things come to mind. The first one is the shadow link in the water temple. Ocarina. The second one is the mirrored prince in prince of Persia. The original one. Up until that point the game had been relatively straight forward but that made it sinister.

I don't know if this is as good as many mentioned, but I do recall being creeped out a bit with Endless Ocean in the Abyss, particularly when the giant squid appears out of no where from the blackness. I think for me, it wasn't that it was terrifying, it's just that the game is so completely tame, by contrast it stands out.

Any game that has a sequence that simulates your computer crashing will ALWAYS induce panic and fear in me. I think I'm alone in this but on more than one occasion Shadow of the Colossus gave me a lingering chill down my spine, such as the relentless hate with which #14 chases you through the ruined city or the idea of something huge lurking underwater like #7. And as I typed that another one suddenly flashed before me that I thought I'd forgotten. That freaking giant octopus hidden in one of the Assassin's Creed II crypts! I left the game idle with Ezio at the waterside while replying to a text and then the cutscene caught my eye - WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT UNDER THE WATER?!?!? Needless to say, I did that puzzle first time without falling in.

It was a TombRaider game for me. I think it was the first game, towards the end of the game. I was in a large flat cave and came upon a blue enemy and blasted away and I died. The next try I obsevered the blue enemy more closely and noticed it was mirroring my every move. That combined with a lack of sleep just freaked my ass out.

I remember that part in Q4. For the most part a just-above-average shooter but that whole sequence was a mind-melter. I remember coming to that first saw and thinking "Pff, somebody'll rescue me. Any second now... Um...getting a little close here... AAAAGH!"

Bastion. The hallucination sequence. The narration going AGAINST you. Definitely one of the most unnerving moments I've ever had during a game.

I'm going to have to say that my moment that freaked me out was Monster Doc Ock in the PS1 Spider-Man game, holy crap the last few moments of that chase scene had me standing and yelling at Spider-Man to run faster.

In that exact game, I fell into one of the newspaper machines on one of the levels earlier and it actually scarred me for life. I still remember it and that was forever ago. I didn't expect the machine to eat spider man.... o.o
