Speaking of prequels, Crisis Core is another example of how the bad guys win. At the cliff overseeing Midgar, Zack (and the comatose Cloud) are surrounded by Shinra (The bad guys). Despite his best efforts, the endless soldiers of the Shinra army eventually kill him, and he dies as Cloud comes out of his coma. This leads on to the events of the main game, Final Fantasy 7...

dude, do you not know how to read? these are games where bad guys win no matter what. not a game of good or bad endings.

(Spoiler Alert, obviously) The most recent one in this category: Batman: Arkham City, Joker manages to poison Gotham, and not only that but Batman wasn't able to save anyone but himself, in spite of his best efforts the super prison still exists, Dr. Strange is killed right in front of Batman, Ra's al ghul dies as well, (maybe thats not quite as big of deal.) and many of the political prisoners are killed right under Batman's nose. Batman at the end of the game is only actually able to save himself one small victory for him while a vary big victory for Joker, who managed to kill a very large population as well as make it look like Batman has killed his first bad guy

What about god of war kratos is just a prick that's killing lots of gods for no reason last time I checked Gods=good Kratos=bad

Ares saved Kratos life, gave him the blades so he could win battles, Kratos in a fit of rage caused by battle and the weapons supplied by Ares accidentily killed his wife and child. He was then cursed and went a bit mad (but who wouldn't). He was pissed at Ares and decided to get revenge by finding a way to kill him. Ares didn't exactly get along with his family, so they gave Kratos their blessing (along with special abilities and weaponry). In the endKratos killed Ares. Then GoW 2 came out. The story being Zeus believed that one of his children would decide to do to him what he did to his father (a reason for him giving Kratos his blessing) so Zeus decided to kill Kratos. Kratos of course finds a way to escape the afterlife and decides on revenge again. But facing the gods alone, and without his weapons and abilities, just isn't doable, so he gets help from the Titans (who as we know were Imprisoned by the gods) so it's revenge all over. Unfortunately the game ended quickly... Part 3 comes along and after being used, played, and (yes I'm going to say it) bamboozled he decides to go ahead and kick all their asses, and "dies" in the process. Being driven mad by weapons meant for gods which in turn cause a life shattering accident (leaving you with nothing but remorse until there's absolutely nothing) , being used to settle sibling rivalries and then being murdered by your father due to paranoia set by what he did ages ago, AND THEN realizing by allying yourself with your enemies enemies only to find they too were using you so they could be the absolute power thus bringing on the end of the world all seem reason enough to kill em all...plus he sacrificed himself in a way he felt could make life for mankind better, a world without gods, titans, and their f***ed up ideas for games.

    This guy gets it.

You also missed Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance and Mortal Kombat Armageddon. In those the bad guys winning at the end were revealed in the next instalment to be the canon ending out of the various character's endings, but it should still count.

I feel compelled to comment about Final Fantasy VI: Halfway through the game, despite your joint efforts, Kefka succeeds in destroying the world and becoming its ruler. Fallout: New Vegas? There is no happy ending, it's either roman slavers, bureocratic war-bent territorial assholes, a de-facto tyranical self-righteous 200 years old pseudo corpse, or anarchy and rule of tribal people reduced to their most base human hedonistic desires. No matter who wins at Hoover Dam (or your karma), it's bad guys everywhere. Metro: Last Light suggests that the TRUE ending in Metro 2033 is the BAD one, where you shoot the alien and actually fire the rockets to destroy them. So, Metro 2033 is another game where the "bad" guys (i.e, humanity) win. OFF by Mortis Ghost? Who knows wheter the demented crusade led by the Batter was righteous and just, or just a puppet controlled by us because that was what was required of us to progress through the game and beat it? No matter the ending, it's still very grey to whether the Judge or the Batter are good. Painkiller and Doom, both AMAZING FPS's, end up horribly. In the first one, despite all his efforts, Daniel ends up battling a never-ending horde of demons thanks to him killing Lucifer and allowing Alastor to rule on his stead. Doomguy loses his pet bunny, the earth is utterly and brutally destroyed in the process of being a badass, and even though you destroy the forces and send them back to hell, they eventually come back on Doom 2 so there's that. Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven, where Thomas Angelo finally overthrows Don Salieri and sends him to jail, and despite all that and surviving, thirteen years later, two henchmen kill him on his house with a shotgun ("Don Salieri sends his regards"), thus never truly "ending" with the bad guy Salieri, who got Frank and Tommy killed anyways (and poor Paulie...) The Bad End for Cave Story in wich Curly dies drowned (how does a robot DROWN?) and you can choose to escape the island with Sue's brother. Even if you choose not to, defeating the Doctor is only a temporary victory, as Ballos is still alive and well and soon another "Doctor" will come and inherit the crown to try and fulfill the same megalomaniac ends. I could mention more, but they escape my mind at the moment.

Dangit! You just had to mention OFF, and now I have the battle theme (pepper steak) stuck in my head... Again!
  • DimmaDunk - January 7, 2015 3:15 p.m.

Peppersteak is such an awesome battle theme, it fits perfectly the bizarre artstyle of Mortis Ghost and the atmosphere of the game itself.

they forgot the game: Dead Island. In the end, they get to kill the big boss, but left the remaining people to die from either zombie attack or the nuke that was dropped off to the island. Either way, in the DLC, the big boss turns out to be a good guy mislead to be the bad guy and was killed due to the confusion.
  • Managorth - August 28, 2014 3:01 p.m.

I just wanna say, you forgot Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

The Chaos demon "wins" at the end of WH40K: Dawn of War 1

Hasn't anyone else seen the obvious, numerously repeated Transformers typo? It's Decepticons, not Deceptecons.

anyone who has bothered to read any of the halo books would know that reach doesn't get completely destroyed. the covenant are searching for relics on the planet and do so after targeting specific areas on the planet. In first strike, i believe, its been awhile since i read it, master chief goes to reach at some point after getting rescued and helps fellow spartans take out the covenant shit heads trying to find the relics they are looking for. also, if u pay attention at the end of reach the planet is fully green and looks inhabitable.

WarHammer 40,000 Space Marine... If you are used to the 40k series, then you are used to hearing that the HUMANS are the BAD guys...running around the universe killing everything for no reason... However, in Space Marine, you play the typical shit role in a space series (You are playing as human) and you win... Most of these other suggestions just seem to be alternate endings that allow bad guys to win. Not many games actually HAVE the bad guys win...
