robopon made me lol, they should be sued. And dead space wasn't just a copy of resident evil, it improves on nearly every aspect of the re games and modernizes their stale formula, which is why I love dead space and abhor resident evil. Great article though, props.

I think Dead Space take elements for others titles like DOOM 3 ,by example , the atmospheric (the voices, the laments from the backgrounds in dark and tiny rooms and corridors )even the engine in Dead Space is too similar to the idtech 4 engine, the DOOM 3 engine .The audio and video logs in DOOM 3 , a medium to tell and expand the game history of the game , was used too for the studio behind the development of Dead Space . I think about the necromorph named "the hummannity child", the monster that regenerate himself is a rip off, not from the "Iron Maiden" from Resident Evil 4, but the Nemesis from Resident Evil 3.

i remember seeing an ad for robopon in a game informer and it looked like if pokemon were robots

"Blang blang blang blang blang blang racing!" Or better yet, "Wai Wai Wai Wai Wai Wai Racing!"
  • FETALJUICE - August 31, 2009 10 p.m.

Honestly, Dead Space's single player is much more fun than RE5, which makes Dead Space one of my favorite games.
  • FinalGamer - August 31, 2009 7:54 p.m.

Damn I didn't realise Syphon Filter was such a copy? Shame because I REALLY love the original PS1 trilogy.
  • TractorBoy21 - August 31, 2009 7:41 p.m.

I HATE YOU ROBOPON! I bet the feckin music is ripped off as well!
  • FlyinMX - August 31, 2009 7:24 p.m.

What about Limbo of the Lost? Then again, it doesn't really steal gameplay ideas, it just stole everything else, lol.
  • AMayer - August 31, 2009 6:16 p.m.

I agree with Unoriginal. Why are there no Grand Theft Auto clones on here? And personally, I think this Top 7 was very "meh".
  • CapnCrotchPunch - August 31, 2009 3:43 p.m.

Dave Meikleham Is by far, the funniest UK editor of the month (August not September)
  • Csheroe - August 31, 2009 2:26 p.m.

Never heard of robopon. Damn the box art!
  • metalgatesolid - August 31, 2009 1:46 p.m.

Syphon Filter and just about every game to include stealth has copied MGS. MGS was the start of the stealth genre. Look at Splinter Cell as well. Both Syphon and Cell are ripped straight off MGS just with different abilities. Im not saying the others havent contributed to gaming but MGS has set a marker for stealth games and storytelling.

i think banjo was waay better too XD
  • noobeater - August 31, 2009 10:46 a.m.

ilove super mario 64 and although there is a blatent ripoff, i think banjo kazooie is so much better. games always have and always will compete with each other, but most of these are just pure laziness
  • ranzatsu - August 31, 2009 10:25 a.m.

I agree with the Robopon thing. From the screenshot, boxart and the statistics (like HP, level, you get me.). And I also played it and it sucked. Freaking game made me want Pokemon more. And even if Dead Space "imitated" Resident Evil, I still love it!
  • Schizo - August 31, 2009 7:27 a.m.

I remember buying robopon in hopes of recreating the pokemon experience but it failed and i hated myself afterwards
  • Dalibor - September 23, 2009 4:06 p.m.

Some of those games may be a ripoff but they were still fun to play.

How about these games: -Shadow Hearts From the New World, ripped off from Final Fantasy X. Copied Story:A female priestess-like character(Shanaia),wanders around to find temples in order to gain power form them, this power helps her turn into anthropomorphic elemental creatures(resembling?),and weakens her body. Oh and add the tall,wordless,native-american looking guardian who follows/protects her. Even the main protagonist resembles Tidus in looks and somewhat in attitude. Ripped status screen and even save screen. Even the map looks identical. Ripped leveling up&ability gaining system. a.k.a Sphere Grid. In SH.F.T.N.W there's this zodiac system thing in which you place your magics and abilities, it looks strikingly alike visually to FFX Sphere Grid, and while it doesn't offer the depth of the S.G, it still works in a similar way: the zodiac constellation has this free slots where you put the magic there, and you can upgrade these slots in order to be able to use stronger magic. Even the FF-esque "take me to the fighting screen" visual effect. -Guitar Hero, ripped from Guitar Freaks. And I mean, EVERYTHING. -God of War franchise, ripped off from Devil May Cry franchise. Whether it is for the redish ghostly ways being blocked, until you defeat all enemies. For the red orbs(blood) you accumulate and pay in order to get new abilities, new moves. Or green orbs in order to replenish you health. Getting a longer health bar and MP/DT points by means of attaining a certain number of certain items. Almost identical HUD,controlling scheme&mechanics, a power up mode, different costumes attained from beating the game in varying difficulties. -Grand theft Auto, ripped off from Driver. What GTA is nowadays is basically a Driver 2 with guns, health bar, mafia and crappy story line. -The Legend Of Zelda:Twilight princess/Okami. More of a draw here. The thing is, even though Okami came first then Twilight Princess, Okami has taken so much from The Legend of Zelda franchise, whereas Twilight Princess with the whole wolf with tattoos and a creature atop for the ride resembles a lot to Okami. -Ninja Gaiden a rip off from Castelvania. The old 2D platformer NG is inarguably Castelvania with ninjas. If you played both games, you just know.
  • Till - September 8, 2009 8:52 p.m.

what about #0: Ripped of: Kill.switch Game: Gears of war Or Sonic+Earthworm Jim = Jazz Jackrabbit xD
  • BigBossOSE - September 7, 2009 1:46 a.m.

Darkwatch. That game was straight ganked from the Halo template. Before regenerating health was the popular thing to do, Darkwatch copied it, along with controls, weapons, and even system menus that were mirror imitations. It was almost fun to point out each little thing that mimicked Halo.
