    This list doesn't include Ico or Shadow of the Colossus? For shame. Those two are probably the closest parallels to Citizen Kane that exist. Critically acclaimed, loved by game designers, massively influential, but not a great success with the public. They defied convention and showed that there were ways of storytelling that had never been seen before. And they had some really ground-breaking technical achievements which influenced the rest of the gaming world dramatically - HDR bloom, dynamic exposure, realistic fur, etc.

    StarCraft? Yes, it fine tuned the genre's gameplay mechanics into a very tight package, but I see it more as evolutionary than revolutionary. What about Dune 2? If I remember correctly Dune 2 basically pioneered the core mechanics imitated by modern RTS games such as resource harvesting, the three factions with (some) variations in units, unit/building construction and placement, etc.

    Yet another detailed and interesting article Mikel! Of all of these games I’ve played, they’re all not only pioneering, but also hella fun Although some of these influenced games wouldn’t necessarily haven’t existed without their influence (because some of them are spin-offs of pre-existing franchises and they definitely would have just found some other game to borrow from)
