TGS 2011: Woah! Final Fantasy X HD remake revealed for Vita and PS3

Sony’s press conference keeps getting better, with Square-Enix taking the stage with some big news that’s sure to excite some gamers while making others fuming mad. No, they didn’t finally show off that Final Fantasy VII remake you’ve been waiting for – actually, if you’re one of the many who has been clamoring for that, you might want to sit down. Instead of remaking VII, Square-Enix is giving Final Fantasy X the HD treatment, remaking it for both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita.

And for as much as this is sure to infuriate hardcore FFVII fans, it really does make sense. PlayStation 2 games can be remade in HD without too much extraneous work, as we’ve seen with ICO/Shadow of the Colossus and the God of War HD Collection. Taking a PlayStation game and making it look like anything less than crap in HD, however, is another story. At that point they’d be literally rebuilding the entire game, and for as fun as that might sound to you, it really makes no sense whatsoever. With the amount it would cost they could just make Final Fantasy XV.

Also, Final Fantasy X is awesome, and we’re really hoping that there’s a trailer to go with this extremely exciting announcement.

I'm very happy with this announcement. Final Fantasy X is one of my all-time favorite games, and given what Square has been doing with the series over the last decade (MMORPGs, ill-advised sequels, and endlessly delayed games in the series proper that turn out to be disappointments), I'd be fine with them just putting out HD remakes of their great games instead. I agree that X is the most logical choice for an HD remake because it would be much easier than anything that predated it. Those games would be to be entirely rebuilt on a new engine, which would be costly and time-consuming. I'm not sure I agree that they could just make Final Fantasy XV in the same time and for the same cost because they wouldn't have to rewrite the story, but it certainly would be formidable. If I had confidence that XV would be anywhere close to as good as any of the games from VI through X, then I would prefer an entirely new game. But I don't have that confidence. Actually, I'm wondering if this remake of X isn't both a way to get more money out of fans of the series (this is one I'd gladly pay for, as at least I know I'm getting a great game with a great story--much more than I can say about XII or XIII) and also to test the market for sequels to their other games. If this one makes a fortune, that would indicate that the demand for a Final Fantasy VI or VII sequel would be very strong, so it might be worth the time and money to make HD remakes of those games instead of putting out another mediocre addition to the series that tarnishes its legacy. I think Square cares a lot more about making money than anything else, so I'm hoping that it will sell well enough that it would make sense financially to start remaking other games. In particular, a Final Fantasy VI remake is at the top of my wish list.

Have all of you people gone insane? FFX had the best system and Lulu is the hottest FF character since Tifa, definitely, but let's run down its many and numerous faults, shall we? 1. Incomprehensible story. I have yet to meet anyone who beat it who can explain it to me. 2. Blitzball. The worst FF add-on since, well, ever. 3. Kimahri's uselessness. This is a personal one since he was far and away my favorite character; why didn't they make him more useful??? 4. The Ultimate weapons. Auron's was the only one that was remotely attainable. I didn't feel like dodging 200 lightning bolts or getting 0'00" in the chocobo race. In fact . . . 5. Underuse of Chocobos. Chocobos are objectively awesome. 6. Tidus. Worst FF protagonist since FF8. 7. The ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE STORY. HOW CAN ANY OF YOU THINK IT WAS WELL WRITTEN??? ARE YOU ILLITERATE??? Penny Arcade had some choice words about this, but I don't feel like digging through the archives to find the comic.

How can you call us illiterate if you can't even understand the story?

    LOL

How can you tell us that you can't comprehend the story and that the story was terrible in the same comment? I understood the story easily. It would have probably just been better to point out unanswered questions in the story and not seem like a moron.

I find the FFX story one of the easiest to understand out of the games I've played. I don't see how you can complain about a game that you, according to yourself, can't even understand. You don't understand the story, you can't get the ultimate weapons. Most of your "Faults" are based solely on opinion, you can't say a game is bad based on your own opinion. Your other points seem to be down to the fact you're an idiot who can't understand a simple story line and the fact that you're crap at the game. It's fine that you have an opinion, just don't present it as fact.

Wait. The story was confusing to you? It's actually more easy to understand than Final Fantasy 7 or 13. Judging by your 'judgment', you have no reason to have an opinion on the game for the sole fact that you don't understand it or are too lazy to beat it and get all the hidden stuff. Tidus, I will agree is a whiny character, but he doesn't kill the game for me. More than a million people like this game. Know why? Because they played it and can comprehend it. So, think of it this way... you're a one in a million idiot.

I simply don't understand how anyone can dislike this game. Apart from having the best fighting system by far, it also had the best story, and the most likable characters. However, I see no need for a HD update, even though I can see it would be very cost effective on square enix's part, it just simply seems pointless.

Buying PS3 now for this alone. Now to wait for a FFVII HD that will cost as much as 3-4 PS3 games! :D

F U C K YEEEEAH!!!! Square Enix finally does something right. Screw the FF7 remake, that's overrated and old news! I'll definitely be getting a Vita for sure JUST for this :D

Best news I've heard all week! Now maybe Jecht's in-game renders won't look so dumb.
  • quincytheodore - September 14, 2011 8:28 p.m.

The Sending in Kilika... in HD. Lulu's chest... in HD. Nostalgia is such a powerful thing. Take my money, Squeenix.
  • waitingforCharlietosnap - September 14, 2011 10:16 p.m.

This is already one my most favorite games, so I'd be excited for it in general, but this man here has the right idea (on both accounts lol)
  • lordgodalming - September 14, 2011 5:38 p.m.

FFX is my favorite game of all time, I'll just put that out there. I have been waiting for this announcement since I heard about the first God of War Collection. I had hoped Square would chuck in X-2 and XII, but I also knew better. Yoichi Wada is the worst thing to happen to that company since ever.
  • nikko-tan - September 14, 2011 4:42 p.m.

i am stoked for this, but please... DON'T INCLUDE THAT FCKING CHOCOBO TRAINING MINIGAME!
  • profile0000 - September 14, 2011 2:41 p.m.

Oh, cool, FFX was great. It still looks fine by today's standards though, so I find it a little odd. I want an HD FFVI or FFVII next.
  • Ridgley - September 14, 2011 2:28 p.m.

    Fu*k this sh*t. Remake 7, X still looks good.
  • TheGodEmperor - September 14, 2011 1:57 p.m.

Careful, GR. You'll anger many by admitting you liked FFX :P which is a shame cause FFX was pretty damn fun. Great combat system and removing the typical exp level system for something new was a fun change. Story wasn't anything special nor were the characters, but the world was pretty and had a cool development (even if you have to take some liberties with logic from our world).
