TGS 2011: Super Mario 3D Land trailer delivers the giddy fresh excitement New Super Mario Bros. didn't

It's not that the DS' New Super Mario Bros. was a crap game by any stretch of the imagination, of course. In fact it was bloody brilliant. But throughout, I just couldn't shake the feeling that I was playing a game that lacked the freshness and spark that core Mario games usually exude in abundance. Kind of like it was a very, very good tribute game rather than a real one.

The 3DS' Super Mario 3D Land however, now looks to have no such problems. I had my doubts about the game's lesser freedom compare to the likes of Galaxy, but now I've seen more of it, I love the idea of combining 3D Mario's versatility with the tight, linear challenge of 2D Mario. You might too. Have a look and find out. And then tell me, for I wish to hear.

Oh man that looks like a combination of Galaxy and Mario 64. Homer drool!

    I just had a nostalgia heart-attack...

I preordered this about 3 weeks ago and I'm certainly excited for it.
  • Errrrbo - September 13, 2011 3:22 p.m.

I'm not a fan of fixed-camera 3D platforming, so this isn't really interesting me.
  • TAYREL713 - September 13, 2011 5:03 p.m.

So why reply to a story about a game with those specific features?

    Aw yeah, that was great!

Hey, look, the Mario game is the killer-app. Anyone suprised? I'm sure as hell not. Which is why I need it. Right now.

At :36 I got the sudden urge to yell "PARADOX" and play the inception music
  • marioman50 - September 13, 2011 11:44 a.m.

I feel like this is a departure from traditional Mario style games, the same way Super Mario Land 1 & 2 was.
  • shawksta - September 13, 2011 12:15 p.m.

Miyamoto's goal was to make a 3D platforming game for mario that can complement his 2D roots, what they instead did was create a brand new game type for Mario. 3D land will be what Miyamoto originally intended, the TRUE Mario 3D platformer that is in its true 2D roots

DAMN ITS AWESOME! Take a close look Dave, Bowser's wearing a Tanooki Tail! First time he decides to use Mario's Powers against him!
  • losthero15 - September 13, 2011 12:48 p.m.

can't wait to see Bowser with a fire flower... oh wait
  • SillyPigeon - September 13, 2011 11:13 a.m.

This trailer looks great! Like a mini Mario Galaxy (which I'd like to point out didn't give you much freedom, its levels were very linear)
  • bigwill1221 - September 13, 2011 10 a.m.

Eh so its a fusion of super mario 64 and the original games on nes
  • shawksta - September 13, 2011 12:16 p.m.

Thats what everybody thinks, its actually not gonna be freedom like Mario 64
  • jackthemenace - September 13, 2011 9:19 a.m.

I hate to say it, but... ... This looks pretty crap. :/ I enjoyed the 2D mario games, even on the Wii and the DS, and then SMG had the looks, but it didn't FEEL like a mario game, y'know? Thius kinda of platforming isn't exactly new, and doesn't look all that brilliant. If it was from an established series like Ratchet and Clank I could understand it, but, however good Mario 64 was (I never played it), It's not Mario
  • Fuzunga - September 13, 2011 11:30 a.m.

Your comment is illogical to me.
  • shawksta - September 13, 2011 11:31 a.m.

Mario's all about Platforming, your probably not looking at it the right way, but this IS Mario, Galaxy, while it looked wierd and Not Mario-ish, it Revolutionized Platforming, and sequel a much better job, its easy to understand why you dont like it but you should give it a second look, its REALLY good
  • shawksta - September 13, 2011 11:33 a.m.

Also, thats the thing, Miyamoto thought himself aswell that Mario 64 wasnt the same 2D trickiness Mario's past game is, He tends to Make Super Mario 3D Land to be the TRUE Mario 3D platformer that is true to his 2D games. Simply put, Mario's 3D and 2D platforming games are 2 different things, Mario 3D land will be the true mix of them
