Super Mario 4 domain nabbed by Nintendo

It's been known for quite some time that Nintendo was working on a 2D Mario Bros. game, though we assumed it would likely be a follow-up to the New Super Mario Bros. franchise, either on the 3DS or the upcoming Wii U. The NSMB games have sold absurdly well, after all, so it would make sense for Nintendo to continue growing that franchise.

New news, however, has many believing that the next 2D Mario game won't be New Super Mario Bros 2., but Super Mario Bros. 4.

Nintendo has reportedly picked up the domain name "," hinting that the publisher might be pulling a Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and continuing to grow the platformer series that started it all. While this is, obviously, pure speculation, it sure makes sense, though the brashness of Nintendo to purchase the domain name without attempting to hide it (Nintendo of America is listed as the holder) is somewhat strange.

There's always a chance that this is just Nintendo scooping up a bunch of domain names "just in case," though we're going to choose to be sensationalist and excited regardless. The prospect of a true 2D Super Mario Bros. 4 is simply too awesome for us to let anything get in the way of our enthusiasm. Sorry.

Super Mario World had the subtitle "Super Mario Bros. 4" in Japan. SMB4 already existed.

Nice bit of info there. Puts their theory in a different (bogus) category.

I'm honestly surprised they didn't already have it.

It will be interesting to see Nintendo take mario back. I wonder what the style's gonna be, New Super Mario was no doubt a nice refreshment but to continue Mario's old roots, he will probably have to be 2D again instead of 2.5D but You know Nintendo, always adding twists. Whatever it is, Nintendo will always keep shut till they want to tell us, speculations be growing.

Well, there are TWO Mario games currently in development. I think. I dunno if was ever formally announced, but I would guess that the NSMB Mii tech demo for the Wii U at E3 last year is a real game. So there's that, and this other phantom new 3DS Mario game that we know very little about. So maybe that could be Super Mario Bros 4. The more important question is what team is behind this mystery game? (I've got my fingers crossed for the Galaxy 1 team.) Going back to the numbered Bros line could be awesome, but it also brings a lot of expectation. If it's just an excuse to riff off of Super Mario Bros 3 yet again, I will be disappointed. But if it's a true sequel and advance in classic 2D Mario platforming, then I am all for it.

Good point but its still a tech demo, showing the HD portion of New Super Mario bros.Wii, theres no reason for it to be a real game without the Tablet Controllers use. Nintendo said they want to keep innovating with Mario. They said the next 3DS game will be a 2D scroller, my moneys on either a REAL return to classic or Something unique like Super Mario 3D land.

Not too long ago, Nintendo registered That has turned out to be something COMPLETELY different now.
