Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes

Bore you to tears, it will…

Words: on October 7, 2009

The Clone Wars is little more than yet another of those tedious, overly-simple, unengaging, repetitive arcade-adventures that proliferate the bargain bins of games stores, preying on the wallets of well-meaning grandparents and leaving behind a stream of traumatized children in their wake.

It’s a grim button-masher of a game at the best of times, but in all honesty the game’s actually at its best when you’re just hammering the ever-suffering buttons, because the fixed camera makes the platforming segments an absolute chore. Lining up any kind of jump would be a frustrating experience, if only you didn’t have an infinite number of attempts at it. When you’re not even bothered that your character has plunged to his doom, that’s when you know you’re wasting your time. The only motivation to carry on, in fact, is to find an even more painful vertical drop onto jagged rocks to fling him off.

Droids can be ‘jacked’ in order to use their offensive capabilities, but this is way too fiddly and frustrating to entertain. There are also some shooty clone trooper bits, but why are we even talking about this game, anyway? We’d much rather talk about anything else.

Ahem... for the sake of my fandom, I have rented and played this game--and for the sake of fair reviewing, I decided to put as many of my thoughts about the game here as I could (after all, what's the point of a 5000 character limit if you don't put it to good use?)

This game is not a great game--by far, but it is also not the horrific atrocity that this review makes it out to be. Covering the four major categories that I require for gaming: mechanics, multiplayer (if present), graphics, and presentation.... I give the game a solid 7.

Mechanics: They are not genre defining, they aren't bad either. This is a game based upon a TV show made for children. Children will want to play this game... the mechanics are designed to work for children. Jumping is simple once you figure this out. The game is pretty much scripted to make every jump simple... the only time you fall off a cliff is when you try to think outside the "child proof" box and then make your Jedi jump, or double jump, over an odd gap. You don't need to think hard here... you just place yourself on the line and press a. The only times I fall off is when I try to jump like I'm playing an actual platformer... it's not designed for that... after about level 2... I got the hang of it. Is this necessarily fun? No... not really, but it works for kids. The camera on the other hand... it's a pain, and no amount of help can fix it. It looks like your estranged uncle showed up for the christmas party smashed, then picked the camera out of your father's hands and started filming for the rest of the day... it's really bad and it will cause most of your accidental "deaths"... which actually just means you respawn at the nearest checkpoint... which are EVERYWHERE, and I was thankful for it... because you really don't get that much life to begin with. Dying would have made this game suck... instead the camera and the unlimited lives balance each other out into a happy contention. You really don't get too frustrated. Lightsaber fighting is remeniscent of the Ep. III video game... and it works. When you have two people playing it's quite fun. You can take over droids and use them as weapons... which was a nice new mechanic for this game. Most droids are easily controlled and if you unlock the cheat... you can make all the droids do a different dance. Apart from the Jedi characters you can play as clones, and this is like Battlefront and Shadows of the Empire had a retarted love-child and told no one about it. you can fire your gun two ways with the right button or with the right stick (which if you are a FPS player will dismay and destroy you... also it will destroy your FPS skills if you let yourself get acustomed to this)... and these levels play like a bloated hutt in death throws... but it's meshed out with nice levels where you pilot walkers, and minigames where you hack consoles (which is a bizzare amount of fun). In all the levels you can unlock challenges which pit you against your partner for the highest score... where you destroy droids, fly ships, collect orbs... ect... and these are a nice change of pace and they are fun as well.

Multiplayer: This game is best played with a friend or a child... it makes the bad stuff funny and the really bad stuff bearable, plus it makes it easier to get a bulk of the trophies/achievements... if not all of them. In one play through me and my little cousin played on Master difficulty and ended the game with 38 and never had to go back and re-do anything. The cast varies and swaps so you get a chance to play as everyone... the jedi and clone levels swap in and out so you don't have to do either for too long, and there are plenty of different enemies and challenges to keep you both going. After chapter 3 you'll start to get tired but it's almost over by then... so it's ok to keep going. Boss fights are made for two people to play, and they are actually a great deal of fun... so it's a good multiplayer experience. You'll both die laughing the first time you see dancing droids.

Graphics: I wasn't too impressed with the graphics. They didn't look as good as the TV show, which with a PS3 you had the capabilities... their mouths moved in time with the words though... and the story was decent enough. I liked the new villian and I didn't like having to see Cad Bane yet again, but you'll have enough story to keep you playing to the end to see what happens.

Presentation: Overall the presentation is what you would expect: Children come play this game and waste your time. It's easy trophies or achievement points... so I say play the game and be a child for a few hours... it'll take about 5 to finish perhaps 6. The narration and movie bits are well done, and the levels are all quite a bit different... you'll find variation in the chaos and that's a good thing I believe.

The game has flaws, but it's not horrible. So yes... solid 7 from my book and hopefully someone reads this and finds it useful.

Darn... and I was hoping for a new Star Wars game worth plaing...

However, I feel that this is not a review either. You complained. Congratulations, fan-boy, you were disappointed... but what about characters? those few abilities that are there? the clone parts? the shooter side of the game? There is still plenty here the I know NOTHING about... and seeing as how it's multiplayer... what about that?

Yahoo gave me a better review and it was actually positive! I expect more from gamesradar... I come here before I buy every game (you hardly control my decision, but I do... most of the time... appreciate your input); however, I feel that you have dropped the ball with this review. My personal opinion.

THIS is not a review! I want a real game test! after playing the demo i experienced the same things as the reviewer here, so i think he has also only played the demo and not the full game. Not that i would care about this game in any way, but i seems that the reviewing on this site is going down i terms of length and therefore quality (i.e. more infos)

It looks like the latest SW games are going downhill in terms of quality. Will LucasArts ever understand that the Dark Forces/Jedi knight series still had plenty of possibilities to be explored in the future? They should think about it, the games in the series were just awesome.
