The virtual worlds of EverQuest Online Adventures, Cosmic Rift, Star Chamber, and Infantry will soon be no more than distant, last-gen memories, as Sony has confirmed it will be pulling the plug on the four MMOs on March 29.
of these games shares a special place in both ours and our players'
hearts,” wrote the SOE in its latest update. “This is not an easy
decision, but there comes a time when it's best for our developers to
move on to the next adventure, and that day has come.”
To ease the transition, SOE is offering the players of EverQuest Online Adventures a 3 month Gold Membership to EverQuest and EverQuest II, both of which have taken the free-to-play plunge. Those free passes will be available starting March 16.
EverQuest Online Adventures launched in 2003 for PlayStation 2, and arrived the same year Star Chamber: The Harbinger Saga brought its brand of online card collecting to computers. Infantry, released in 1999, is by far the oldest title in Sony's announcement; followed by the 2D Cosmic Rift, which was released in 2001. The fact all these games have survived until now is a testament to their communities. So while today's news might not affect a majority of players, know that someone, somewhere will be shedding a tear for these MMOs next month. Will you?
