Sony introduces PSN wallet top-ups via mobile phone

Starting today, PlayStation gamers in the UK will be able to add funds to their PlayStation Network wallet balances by charging top-ups to their mobile phone bills. Whether via contract phones or Pay As You Go, Sony customers should choose “mobile” as the payment option, enter their mobile phone number, and respond via SMS to confirm the wallet top-up. The funds are then added to the PSN account.

Mobile payments company Boku is providing the service, which works with all major UK mobile network operators, although Sony does mention that 'terms and conditions apply which include those of Sony entities, third party service providers, and mobile phone companies'.

Gordon Thornton, Vice President, Sony Network Entertainment Europe, said: “We are always looking at new ways to give our customers more choice in terms of content, accessibility and payment methods, and are pleased to be able to offer the option of mobile operator billing, which are becoming more and more popular.”

I can see this being a potential headache. What's to stop a school kid, who has a contract phone paid for by their parents, racking up a huge bill? I'm sure it's happened before with things like ringtones, and game micro-transactions on iPhones

What's the point of this? So you can put money in your wallet but can't use it until your using your console. Your better off buying one of those cards you can buy in the shops that gives you a code to use when you get home.

Well now think the opposite you are at home you have shops but they are at 20 minutes diriving and all you need from the shop is the card would you drive to get it or send a sms? it aint that crazy if you think about it it is an option a good one.

Can't you just buy points with a credit/debit card? Who doesn't have one nowadays?

well there a lot of people who prefer getting ps cards cause they dont want to use their debit or credits cards, and once again it makes it easier for them, because once again you dont have to give any information besides your phone number, you find no use cause you probably just punch your credit card number but theres people who for x/y reason dont want to give that info and it saves them the trouble from going to the store like myself i prefer give cash and done once again its to have options.
