Six minutes of charming Super Mario 3D World gameplay

Nintendo has released a six minute Super Mario 3D World video serving as an introduction to some of the title’s new gameplay elements including character abilities and power-ups, and Wii U Gamepad and Miiverse functionality.

Billed by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata as “the next step forward in the new style of Mario 3D action games that we first introduced in Super Mario 3D Land for 3DS", the game features a multiplayer mode supporting four users playing as Mario, Luigi, Toad and Peach, each of whom have their own unique abilities. Luigi, for example, jumps further than the others, while Toad runs faster and Peach glides in mid-air. The game also introduces a range of fresh power ups including Cat Mario, which enables the plumber to perform actions like climbing up walls and scratching enemies with his claws, and cherries, which let players duplicate their characters.

The video features a Japanese voiceover, but that’s easy to look past. Set for release on November 22 in the US and November 29 in Europe and Australia, Super Mario 3D World looks the equal of any PS4 or Xbox One game launching alongside the new consoles next month. In our latest Super Mario 3D World preview, we called the game the lovechild of Super Mario Bros 2 and Mario 3D Land.

So this looks pretty amazing. What made the Galaxy games so great was how they constantly switched up the gameplay in fun ways, and this looks to be doing that extremely well. In all seriousness this looks like it could've have been Galaxy 3 if they had just made it space themed and made the areas wrap around rather than be flat, and I mean that in a good way. Gameplay looks amazing, and the co-op I'll probably never touch and it doesn't look like I'll be hurt because of that. For anyone who's still annoyed by the 4 characters, think of it not as extra co-op, but realize that this means you have 4 different characters to choose from when you're playing solo. Rather than Galaxy where you eventually unlock Luigi, in this you have Mario and 3 others right at the start.

What is that level at 0:13? It was shown in the last trailer and another time in this trailer, it looks interesting, as if the Camera angle is forced that way and the area itself is pretty wide and big, wonder what you'll do there.

Henry was too busy cleaning the jizz out of his pants to post this one himself.

@4:21 - Is that Fire Flower Peach? She looks pretty cool. The cherry power up is pretty cool, although it seems to be one of those powerups only useful for situations specifically calling for it. Why does the fourth player have to play as a generic Toad? Why not make a new character if they're having trouble finding characters to fill the role of fourth player? Just seems a little lazy to me that they would use Toad... I honestly can't tell if Toad is an individual or a group of characters anymore. :/

Toad is both an individual and a group, in the same way that "Yoshi" is. So yeah, it does get pretty confusing. However, the selection of characters, and their abilities, seems directly related to SMB2, where Toad was playable, so it makes sense to include him. Plus, besides Yoshi he's one of the only other iconic "good guys" in the Mario series. I imagine that he is coloured blue this time so as to not cause confusion if another player is using Mario; it's important that each character in a multiplayer game is identifiable by a certain individual colour even if their models are completely different. Red Toad still seems to be in the game, however, because his character portrait showed up in one of the trailers.

All this game is a throwback to Super Mario Bros. 2 with those pixies being characters that appeared at the end of that game. Toad was blue in that game also.

Toad is a species :P But Blue Toad was the original 4th character in Super Mario Bros 2, newer versions replaced him with a generic red toad. In this game he's the fastest, making him the ideal choice for speed runners like Justin. Also it should be noted that there is another Toad you play as, a Red Toad, but not a regular generic red toad rather the Toad Brigade Captain from the Galaxy games.

I have been a mario fan my whole life and have bought every nintendo system and every mario game, spin offs and all! and I can tell you this is the best mario game ever! those who find fault like the sony trolls are doing, can suck it!!! This is the mario game that will return mario to his true throne of platformers! yeah I am sure the galaxy are just disappointed with this game NOT!!! if you are a real mario fan, You know this game rocks and hey trolls are we mad because the guy who wrote about the video on this sight compared it to ps4 and x box one? well grow up and get over it! Mario is back in his best game ever, and this will be the game that kick starts the wii u in sales! I cannot wait to buy this game, do not listen to these phony nintendo trolls, I have played the demo of this game at best buy during E3 week and it was great, but it looks a billion times better now! game of the year! Dat Rabbit Chasing, Dat Galaxy style level starting landing form Mario does when he gets shot out of the canon, those lazy as f*ck Goomba's in the water, Dat Mega Mushroom in a 3D Space, Dat Flashlight Block(Which essentially, with that Pet Piranha that eats things for you are basically 3D World's version of Yoshi's Mechanics from Galaxy2), Koopa's CHASE you for their shell again which hasnt happened since 64, you can go IN the shell you picked up in a way thats essentially the new incarnation of Shell Mario from NSMB, Dat gold crown in Multiplayer you can fight over XD, Dat Circus, Dat Miiverse, Dat NSMB2 inspired level, Dat Flipswitch slide, Dat Bullet Bill Train. Damn this game is looking delightful, and really with Watch Dogs and Dk Tropical Freeze being Delayed, this game is right now my most anticipated game for this year. Also, at 3:30 in Bowser's Castle, in the background, DAT YEAR OF LUIGI REFERENCE

So, basically, continuing a trend started fairly recently, Mario's new "thing" is wearing boxes on his head now? Wait, sorry. Blocks. Also, thanks to this, now I know that the Japanese names for Mario, Luigi and Peach are straightforward enough, but that, after double-checking what I heard was indeed correct, Toad is essentially "Pinocchio" with a mushroom-related pun. Bizarre. If he helps save the day, does he turn into a real boy instead of being some sort of mutated fungus thing?
