It should come as no surprise that there is a sequel to Lords of Shadow, given that the game is Konami’s best-selling Castlevania game ever. Dave Cox, the head of the European development studio said that the company doesn't want to disclose how many units they’ve sold, but he said that it exceeded expectations. He also stated that the team is small, so they also set realistic expectations, which is key to exceeding goals.
Either way, this is good news for Castlevania fans. In Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, things pick up where you left off from the previous game. You start off as a middle-aged Dracula, with all of your wonderful vampire powers and abilities. That won't last for very long because we're told you're to lose your powers shortly after. The E3 demo is the very beginning of the game, where you’re given a taste of what you can do with your arsenal of vampiric weapons including the blood whip, void sword, and chaos claws. Between these weapons, you can weave together combos, steal life from your enemies with the sword, and break down otherwise indestructible shields with the claws.
One of the big changes from the previous game is that the camera can be controlled with the right stick. It will still follow you if you leave it alone, but the developers rebuilt the engine to make other accommodations. There will be open world exploration and everything is streamed, so say goodbye to loading times. We’re told that framerate should hold at a steady 30 frames.
Our demo mainly focused on getting used to the combat, and doing a bit of platforming along a massive Titan--turns out you can kill it be vomiting blood onto its innards. Holding the left trigger illuminates a path for you when you're platforming, which is helpful, and can be turned off if you’re playing at a hard difficulty setting. While you’ll spend the majority of the time as Dracula, we were told that he isn’t going to be the only person you’ll be playing as.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is set to come out on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 this winter.
