Rumor: Crystal Dynamics working on Soul Reaver reboot

Crystal Dynamics is reportedly eying the return of a classic PlayStation bloodsucker. Today, VG247 claimed it “has it on good authority” that the studio behind this year's Tomb Raider reboot is working on a similar resurrection for “Soul Reaver” from the Legacy of Kain vampire series.

According to the site's source, the reboot will sport a brand a new art direction and be a full reworking of the early PlayStation franchise, which began in North America in 1996 with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. It's unknown if it will star the vampire Kain from the original, or the wraith Raziel who actually starred in 1999's Soul Reaver sequel.

As for what name the reboot will answer to, Eurogamerpoints out Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics' parent company, has been picking the community's brain on a possible title since last May. According to one survey taker at GameRevolution, possible titles and/or subtitles for the reboot include Obsidian Blood, Obsidian Sun, Dead Sun, and Revenant.

The Legacy of Kain series survived nearly seven years from when it first preyed on PlayStation owners. After Soul Reaver, Crystal Dynamics put out two more sequels starring both Kain and Raziel – Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2: Legacy of Kain – before concluding the series in 2003 with Legacy of Kain: Defiance for PS2, Xbox, and PC. Now that nearly a decade has passed, do you think it's a good time for Raziel and Kain to be reborn?

Gods I was such a fan of Legacy of Kain, I hope they bring this series back with a blood thirsty, soul vanquishing vengeance.

Hey, remember every game from 15 years ago that had even the slightest fanbase? Yeah, we're rebooting it.

Um... I liked it. And if they didn't have a fanbase, Mr smartass, why would they even bother with a sequel?

Unbelievable! I was sure this franchise was a goner, what with the team disbanding and voice talent dying. Its so rare to play through a game with writing as good as this, the script was something else. It makes me very happy that after so long in the abyss its finally being re-born. As long as its new agenda isnt to suck the living life out of the previous awesome games its awesome.

I'd prefer a remake of the original legacy of Kain. But that's probably just me.

No I'll second that. I loved the Legacy of Kain, the characters were well designed, the score at the time was fantastic, and i loved the story. Im a huge fan of the whole series, and can't wait for the next true sequel. But I'm very excited about a remake even if it isn't my favourite of the series

I'll third that. I still have the original Blood Omen and to see that remade would be amazing, I mean battling the Nemesis' army again? Taking down Malek and getting your hands on the Soul Reaver for the first time? I'd love to see those moments reimagined with modern tech.

why does it have to be a reboot? aggghh! can't we get a continuation? i guess i'll never get to see what happens now that raziel is trapped in the soul reaver. i guess this is better than nothing.

I wonder if Soul Reaver will be finished? I remember the strat guide back in the day had areas that didn't make it in the final game. Or at least that is what I remember reading about in EGM, Daily Radar, or what have you. Hard to say how these games will even hold up today though. Mind you I still have Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2 for my PS2.

Am I the only one who's reading the word "reboot"? For all we know it could be a FPS.

This news would make me unbelievably happy. But I kind of hate all of those proposed titles / subtitles.

It's always a good idea to bring back the undead! Seriously, tho', I loved this series, and would love to see it continued.

This would be pretty cool if true but the way things have been lately I'm putting my money on it being/having any or all of the following: 1 - Half a game, lots of DLC. 2 - Unnecessary co-op or VS multiplayer. 3 - Gritty and "urban" with a buzzcut-haired Raziel looking moody on the box art. 4 - Really easy. (although you couldn't really die in the original could you?) 5 - Pre-order "classic" skin bonus which doesn't actually work until 2 weeks after release.

I can dig it. I remember playing it as a kid, but no much--I was kinda creeped out. :/ But now, looking back? I'll HAVE to delve into it, assuming it's real.
