I realize that the term RPG doesn't really mean Role-Playing Game anymore, so I don't really know what would qualifies anymore. If I had to choose a game in which I actually roll played, I would choose the Walking Dead game. Now I know that that game is considered to me more of an adventure category, but I would argue it was a role playing game by the definition of what Role Playing is. I was immersed into a world and into the role of a character. I started making decisions and taking actions based off of what that character would do in that position. Or what I would do. I caught myself numerous times thinking of the character as myself, rather than Lee. That I feel is a good roleplaying game and I think it pulled that off much better than any other game this year.

Final Fantasy 13-2 for the GOTY RPG? Just kidding. I've been playing Dragon Dogma the most this year compared to any other "RPG". Maybe Mass Effect 3 or Xenoblade Chronicles for RPG GOTY. Can we even consider any games released last year in another region as a nominee?

Xcom was a great game..The others meh..

As long as Mass Effect 3 doesn't win anything ever I'm happy.

Well that's a fairly narrow point of view to take. I may not have liked its ending and I found it to be overall weaker than Mass Effect 2, but it was still one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had.

Xenoblade Chronicles was released in Europe last year that combined with many game sites either having the UK review it or reviewing imports, XC was reviewed thus nominated/awarded last year. It doesn't matter if it came out in North America this year, nominating a game in multiple years is just pointless (and unfair on other games).

Mass Effect 3 is a third person game so I don't know how it could get its footing in the FPS genre...

Spares me from having to read any more of these "game of the year" articles. Perhaps Dishonored will win MMO of the year.

this is an excellent list of games, but i played dragon's dogma more than any of 'em. xcom is still probably my goty, though (FC3 is making a late push).

I don't really view either xcom or mass effect 3 as RPGs, therefore my favourite RPG of the year is tales of graces f.

I agree. XCOM is more of a turn-based strategy, however Mass Effect would be an RPG. You create the character and play in the role of Shepard, then again genres cross so much now its hard to tell what genre a game actually is.

Once upon a time there were good RPGs. Then Mass Effect 3 had to have a crappy ending(Seriously can anyone or anything prevent war, let alone bad writing and a space demon child.). I think the thing should have thrown in "And yeah I can erase hate, world hunger, and internet trolls.."

No Xenoblade? Also, XCOM? Turn based strategy is not RPG. If that's the case, we might as well have Call of Duty on there, too.

No pokemon and no xenoblade, no gungir, no growlanser, no kingdom hearts, no chaos rings I forgot how much gamesradar is rpg bias
  • Dante1924 - December 14, 2012 4:16 p.m.

Gungir and Growlanser were mediocre, Kingdom Hearts was pretty good but not RPG of the year, and I don't think IOS games are factored into things (though it's hypocritical that you ask for it to be RPG of the year since you previously said the app store doesn't have any good games). And just which srpg was better than XCOM? You got me at Xenoblade and pokemon, though. Xenoblade really should have kicked Diablo off the list.

mediocre? are you trolling or stupid? pokemon conquest, devil survivor 2,ect were all better than xcom
  • Dante1924 - December 14, 2012 5:44 p.m.

Yep, they are mediocre. Sorry we can't have the same tastes, but I personally found them very mediocre. And yes, Pokemon conquest and Devil Survivor were good, no denying that, but I found XCOM to be far superior, for the reasons stated here: Punishing, yet somewhat fair difficulty, enough variety between the aliens and your abilities to keep things engaging, making decisions in allocating where your funds should go, the tense air when searching for the enemies, the decisions that you need to make on the field that could make or break the mission... yeah, XCOM was fantastic.
