RadarPlays - Beat Hazard Ultra

In this week's RadarPlays Shuffle, Ryan, Lucas, and Greg are visually assaulted by pulsating lights as they attempt to clear the grueling stages of Beat Hazard Ultra to the backdrop of some new Anamanaguchi tunes. While they were mildly successful, the blinding barrage of neon colors has left all three of them temporarily incapacitated. Enjoy with caution.

Want to hang out with GamesRadar's editors while taking a look at retro games, new releases, and totally random experiences? RadarPlays is for you. Mondays we'll be checking out blasts from the past on RadarPlays Retro, Wednesdays we change things up to whatever we feel like playing with RadarPlays Shuffle, and Friday is packed with the strangest titles you’ve never (hopefully) heard of in RadarPlays Freaky. We'll also release RadarPlays for all the new releases, so be sure to check back!

Take that seizure warning at the opening of the game seriously!

Not to mention radiangames Ballistic. Or even I MAED A GAEM W1TH Z0MB13S 1N1T!!!11!! Yeah, I'm kind of a connoisseur of crazy, mind-blowing twitch frenzy games.

This is kind of like, nothing compared to the seizure and photophobia-inducing madness that is Score Rush on XBLIG.

I'm not a particularly impressive player myself, but I do alright and some comments/tips from someone who has played the game quite a lot: Pretty good performance. The second player was it, never played before? Good for a newb, jumping into insane. At least until towards the end when he just died repeatedly....It was painful however, to watch the person seem to intentionally avoid the multipliers. I noticed several 5's and a 10 get ignored. The shields, you never used them it seems? Didn't equip mini-missiles or beams? In Suicidal mode they're a bit more necessary. The Beans moreso than the missiles though (Missiles are handy for taking on snakes and bosses). Also, whilst gentle tracks aren't great for the game, it's more about tracks with lulls in them that are problematic, especially lulls that occur after a lot of enemies spawn on the screen. At the end of the track it's not too much of a bother, but in the middle it can be a big problem. I believe two of my top three tracks as far as points go are Enya tracks, and she's not known for producing particularly metal music XD So yeah, it's not just how loud a track is that matters, but how the game translates the music into weapons and enemies. BTW: Beat Hazard Ultra is just a (significant) DLC update to the game. Sort of like the game went from Beta to Final release. It changed the game in significant ways, not in the least the way the scores were calculated. Even if you have Ultra you can still choose to play classic.

Thanks for the info! It had been awhile since I played Beat Hazard Ultra last, totally forgot about changing out the perks and some of its other mechanics :O

I tend to play it when I'm a bit bored these days, especially if I've recently got a new soundtrack. I notice I said "Beans" rather than "Beams" at one point. Typo, but of course Beans are potent in their own way >_>

Damn you Greg for making the barf noise. If I hear anyone make that noise, it makes me want to barf :/

So many screams... Save some for RadarPlays New Releases - Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

I love this game. The volume and speed of the song do affect how many enemies show up as well as how much damage you can do. I've played it with some quiet songs and it takes forever for anyone to show up, and when they're there they are sluggish and your bullets do essentially no damage. And Beat Hazard Ultra is essentially just an upgrade of the original Beat Hazard that added perks, new bosses, and (I believe) online play.
