Call of Duty: World at War - multiplayer hands-on

Will the shooter maintain online dominance for another year? Sure as hell looks that way...

Seriously, no offense to Call of Duty: World at War’s single player. Toiling through the Pacific and Eastern European theater, communicating with Keifer Sutherland and Gary Oldman, face melting flamethrowers that spits face-melting liquid death? We’re not complaining. You could argue that the immersive cinematic campaign helped Call of Duty 4 move 10 million copies, but it’s certainly not the reason why a healthy fraction of said discs have remained locked permanently in consoles and PCs for almost a year later.

An overwhelming majority of online gamers still can’t get enough of Modern Warfare’s broadband bliss, and having recently emerged from a World at War multiplayer hands-on, we’re proud to say that Call of Duty has lost nothing by returning to the World War II well. It’s fast. It’s beautiful. It’s simple yet challenging, and tight as hell, while miraculously deep. And during the hours we spent with the game we witnessed CoD veterans shouting for joy, and n00bs being converted within minutes.

Okay, using the Modern Warfare engine is a great start, but how exactly does Treyarch follow Infinity Ward’s immaculate multiplayer act from last year? By exercising the ancient “Rule of MORE.” Observe:

US and German weapons are a given, but please take some time to enjoy the expertly crafted artillery brought to you by the Russians and Japanese. And in case you haven’t heard by now, keep your eye out for the Flamethrower. While it can also be used to lay waste to enemies and environments (also available in “MORE!”), graphically melting an online opponent with one provides a euphoric level of satisfaction - somewhere between a prolonged shotgun blast to the face and a humiliating knife kill - and is accompanied by a brutal Raiders of the Lost Ark screaming skin-melt. Prediction: This is going to get used a lot.

Want to humble your aggressors even further? As one of life’s simplest pleasures, there isn’t much that can top the feeling you get from of knifing someone unaware... that is until the bayonet. The Japanese gun attachment is controlled just like the knife, but the close-quarters act itself is much more gruesome than just about any other weapon south of the might Flamethrower.

Few things compare to watching an explosive you’ve just thrown lift an opponent in the air and back to his spawn point. So, thank the stars and heavens for many of the new selectable primary grenades such as Molotov Cocktails, Tabun nerve-gas, and signal flares.

Obviously, CoD4 players have yet to see World at Wars ‘40’s flavored maps, but you can expect to see some classic WWII settings in addition to fresh crumbling metropolises of Eastern Europe and pitiless jungles of the Pacific. They come in the variety of Small, Big, and F**king Huge. The Japanese maps are a particularly welcome visual addition, as sprinting through cherry blossom trees and junky beach lean-tos are something next-geners haven’t done before.

I'm not entirely sure that this will be my favorite game out there due to it being like COD4 (Which became boring because it was rather easy, so I just play private matches), but it should be good enough for me, since i'm not a big fan of any other game coming out this fall.

@Cwf2008

Who cares if it's World War 2? There are actually more modern games out there then WW2, it's just COD4 was the only "noticeable" modern game because it made even the worst FPS player feel like he's doing good. Don't go with the "I'm tired of the whole Nazi deal" now, many modern FPS's out there favor the "Stop the nukes, stop the terrorists" deal as well

Treyarch is only really being hammered because of COD3, and that's understandable to some extent. The main reason they did so terrible is because they only were given 8 months by Activision because they're a money-hungry company just like EA. The average shooter takes 2 years, which is how many IW and COD4 were given.

I plan on public starring the game online until I get bored of it like most of my buddies, then I'll just go to competitive private matches and Co-op once the public matches get boring and infiltrated by kids who are ridiculously easy to kill.

Nebnamlessac, i'm sure this game will be great to a majority of people, because it's pretty much sounding like a carbon-copy of COD4. Which is good, but to myself i'll just say "Ok." because COD4 got boring when it became easy to me.

I'm sure the flamethrower will be big for the first week or so it's out, until people figure out how hindering it was to have one. In real life, they had semi-small range, if the tank was shot you would go up in flames, and that the tank depleted (but does recharge).

Perks may have some type of problem though, not because i'm the idiot who says juggernaut is for "noobs" (I hate to use that term), but because this game will not just be automatics like COD4 was mostly, but because there will be a majority of Bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles as well. If the bolt-action rifles were all one hit kills WITH stopping power, then I would assume the M1 Garand would be 2 shots with anything, so smart M1 users would use juggernaut. That would be a balancing issue.

I'm happy with the return of silencers because I am one of those guys who like to hide under radar. Not exactly realistic, but who cares that much about realism? My favorite gun will be the MP40, PPSH, or Thompson silenced, with whatever they decide to call UAV jammer since it won't be a UAV, it'll be a recon plane.

All in all, this should be a game I rate 9 or a 9.5 out of 10. Not the greatest game, but I'll be happy with it, just like how I gave COD4 the same rating.

.............um.... Okay, the whole idea of WWII has been so overused, that COD4 was pretty much a breath of fresh air. ............and there were cooler guns.

Now I'm pumped to play this game! I Reserved a copy at Best Buy and got a fabric banner with it that hangs proudly in my locker at school.

Maybe converting back to World War II won't be the death of the series.

The only thing that I really wanted to see in this game was the COD3 style multiplayer. Not the whole concept, but being able to drop in and out of split screen online was cool.
When me and my friends play we used to play four on four on two different systems because thats all we had. with COD4 we couldn't do that...
whew!

Man, this Antista guy is hilarious!! I still remember the part with his mom playing Oblivion and the photo montages of him laughing at the twin towers 9/11 disaster. Keep it up!

I don't know Chris. CoD4 got real old after awhile, and I don't know if I could go back to the same style gameplay. I'll probably stick with Socom for the multiplayer.
