Prince of Persia

The saber-slinging desert acrobat returns with solid gameplay and a captivating new girlfriend

Words: on December 3, 2008

The first time publisher Ubisoft spoke to us about the new Prince of Persia game, we’ll admit we feared it was going to stink so badly we’d staple week-old roadkill to our faces to try to mask its smell. The super-macho Prince, always the center of this platform adventure series, is being hobbled with a new sidekick character whose help you require for basically everything? You must rely upon her to help you do your high-level attacks, to heal, or even to jump over long chasms? Considering that non-player side characters in every other game still mostly act like idiots, giving one so much power and responsibility sounds like a recipe for total disaster.

What we didn’t realize was that Elika is different. Waaaay different.

Elika is, simply and dramatically put, the smartest non-player controlled character we’ve met. She doesn’t constantly say “protect me!” then charge ahead into a swarm of enemy attackers like so many others, forcing you to into suicidal rescue missions. She doesn’t get lost or stuck. She doesn’t constantly repeat stupid things.

Not only is Elika not a burden, she’s actually helpful. If you miss a jump and find yourself plummeting Earthward, she magically plucks you from mid-air and returns you to safety. When in battle, she’ll swoop in at your command and launch you into the air for a full-gravity skullcrusher or lay down some magic. And if you’re about to get your own face caved in by a killing blow, she yanks you away so you can regroup. If you’re lost in the giant open world, she can magically point you in the right direction. And as if that isn’t enough, some of the game’s levels are only accessible once Elika – not you – has activated magical plates that enable you to fly, sprint, or super-jump to a new location.

Even with all that, many gamers will argue that the most impressive thing about Elika is how lovable she is. Not puppies and kitties lovable, or big-eyed anime super-cute and excitable lovable. We mean actually lovable, like a real woman with a realistic personality, who’s compassionate and vulnerable, but also brave and capable. Unless your heart is made of stone, she will genuinely endear herself to you and you will care deeply about her.

looks great and has a good story, but is way too repetitive, gets quite choppy (on PS3 anyway) at times and response times aren't great either. SoT trilogy is better.

I'm surprised, I didn't think I would bother with it but it does look pretty cool.

I still don't see why they give PoP so much attention though, I think Jet Set Willy deserves a remake.

NelosAngelos... You've gotta be kidding me. Sands of Time was as close to the original games as you could possibly get... this is just distancing itself, hell, the Prince sounds like some random American moron, what happened to being Persian?

Not that it's a bad game, I'm looking forward to it, it's just that SoT seriously was the 2D games in a modern environment. The two games after that.. not so much.

I've been looking forward to this game for a long time. Glad the Prince finally gets a truly satisfying game set in 3D. I loved his original 2D games, and I like how they set this game to be more like that.

The stupid girl in the first (er, Sands of Time) was the only real problem with that game. You'd get to the end of a tough fight that you really kicked ass, then the stupid girl would die all the way across the room, and you couldn't save her, and had to start over again. Good to hear this companion actually works right.

I just finished with it and i have to say it is some game. It's a WAY easier than the others and thats one of the reasons i liked the others. The difficulty made it stand out from the crowd. But I still loved this. Elika is brilliant and even if it's the same bosses in each area, Elika actually makes it fun to kick their ass again and again and aga....

I used to hate PoP games but this game is fantastic. The difficulty is I think actually somewhat nice, the graphics and movements are very smooth and don't glitch, and of course, Elika. I do think that the boss battles and the minion battles are a bit repetitive, but I love the fact they put more focus on navigating the level rather than fighting a bunch of stupid minions and having insanly hard puzzles. 10/10 awesome, great, one of the year's best.

tha thing that makes it stand out from the other games is....well actully theres alot of thing but ill just say some.its not like those typycal 3D enviorments where you have to wait for it to load when you go to sertain spots it just loads everything at one time and its surprisinglY Quick.Another thing is that when you come to an enemy its not just like you hit them with a few shots and there dead but instead it goes to a different mode and the buttons do diffrent things and its like a boss battle so it alaws you to do diffrent kinds of attacks and more options plus once you beat the game you can start again whith a diffrent look.lastly the hole game looks like a movie and you can choose when to talk with elika or the enemy when in a boss battle.And.............well i think i said enoph if tis was my revew id give it a 10/10
