Pokemon Black and White spotlight: Zorua and Zoroark

This week we're finally getting around to highlighting the first two Pokemon revealed when Black and White was announced. Zorua and Zoroark are in some ways the Riolu and Lucario of this generation – they seemed almost legendary-esque at first, and they're not as easily obtainable as most non-legendary Pokemon. Unlike Riolu though, Zorua and Zoroark are only obtainable if you have certain event-only Pokemon on your cartridge. Let's take a closer look.

#077 Unova / #571 National
Species classification: Illusion Fox Pokemon
Ability: Illusion – User takes on the appearance of the Pokemon in the final position of the player's party (superficial only – does not change moveset, stats etc). Illusion is broken when user takes damage
Location found (Black/White): Lost Forest (by event only)
Egg groups: Ground
Capture rate: 45
Gender ratio: 87.5% male, 12.5% female
Experience at lvl 100: 1,059,860
Base stats: 60 HP / 105 Atk / 60 Def / 120 SAtk / 60 SDef / 105 Spd / 510 Total
Effort values: 2 Special Attack
Evolution family: Zorua > Zoroark at level 30

First off, let's discuss how you can go about obtaining these two. Zoroark is obtainable in B&W via an event in Lost Forest if you've obtained any of the legendary beasts from the GameStop download event that's going on right now in the US (the Raikou and Entei events have already passed, and the Suicune event happens January 31 – February 6). Zorua should also be obtainable via an event in Castelia City if you have the upcoming event-only Celebi, and although details on that event haven't been announced yet, it's safe to assume at this point that it will be similar to the Japanese event. Don't worry too much though if you miss out on the events – Zorua and Zoroark aren't legendaries, so you should have no problem finding a kind person to breed one for you and trade.

Once you've got your precious Zoroark, using him in battle might prove a little tricky. The main aspect to focus on here is his unique Illusion ability – Zorua and Zoroark are the only two Pokemon that have this ability, and it's the only ability either of them can have. Zoroark's defenses are all around incredibly weak, so to successfully use him in battle it's crucial to use the Illusion ability to your advantage and trick your opponent into thinking you sent out a different Pokemon. Here's how Illusion works: when you send Zorua or Zoroark into battle, they take on the appearance of the Pokemon that's in the last position in your party, including gender, Poke Ball and all. The transformation is completely superficial though, so Zorua/Zoroark's stats, moves and type all remain the same. When he takes direct damage from a foe's attack though, the illusion breaks, revealing his true form. The idea is that you'll be able to sneak in at least one KO before your opponent realizes what's going on. After that, Zoroark doesn't stand much of a chance because again, his HP and defenses are really awful.

Pick at least one good special STAB (and for type coverage, you should pick one other special attack too) to make use of Zoroark's impressive base 120 Special Attack, which you can boost even further with Nasty Plot. Other than that, it's worth experimenting with various Illusion setups that will give you maximum time to get a few hits in. Perhaps you could have Zoroark take the form of a Fighting-type Pokemon to lure your opponent into using a Psychic-type attack, although most Fighting-types would not have a plausible reason for using Nasty Plot. What strategy would you use?

I'm sad that I heard about the 3 shinies promotion once Suicine was all that was left, but at least I got one of them and I can now get these guys.
  • DevilDoor - January 31, 2011 2:55 p.m.

    Looks cool
  • billyjack77 - January 31, 2011 1:03 p.m.

How about a new Pokemon Monday? Why has it been 3 weeks?
  • Pokefan8824ever - January 31, 2011 4:30 a.m.

I think the only way I am to get ash's pikachu is if it has another event in the game attached to it otherwise that thing is really useless to get and I am gonna get all three bc like 510BrotherPanda said" free stuff is always nice" I am going to get both games though they give me something to do when I am riding in cars lol.
  • Crabhand - January 31, 2011 2:14 a.m.

I have one of the fliers from Gamestop in front of me, here's the text that seems to imply only one beast is necessary: "If you transfer Shiny Raikou, Shiny Entei, or Shiny Suicune from your Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, or SoulSilver version game to the upcoming Pokémon Black Version or Pokémon White Version games, you can discover a special event that allows you to battle and catch the new Pokémon Zoroark!" I'm very excited for Black and White, I'll probably throw down a preorder at Gamestop tomorrow when my friend and I go to get Suicune.

Dont forget the ash' pikachu event too.
  • Ariaka - January 30, 2011 10:25 p.m.

Go me for not having a frikking GameStop within a hundred miles. Go Nintendo for making a promotion that is entirely impossible for people in half the towns in the US easy to attend. I feel pretty screwed and mad right now.
  • codystovall - January 30, 2011 9:55 p.m.

    What happened to pokemon monday?
  • Romination - January 30, 2011 9:20 p.m.

Really. All 3 shinies. That would have been nice to know so that I didn't just ignore the ones I had already caught.
  • Lando81 - January 30, 2011 8:49 p.m.

    My anticipation is building!
  • Robusken - January 30, 2011 8:38 p.m.

You only need one shiny beast since Japan was only able to pick one and still get Zorark. Well his ability seems pretty fun to screw with people...for about one turn. Lucario seemed to be more usefull battle wise then these guys. Also Carolyn, is there a Pokemon Monday this week?
  • HowdyCowboyCheesesBurger0911 - January 30, 2011 8:37 p.m.

This could be fun. When will pokemon monday be coming back?
  • HowdyCowboyCheesesBurger0911 - January 30, 2011 8:08 p.m.

  • Entreri10 - January 30, 2011 8:06 p.m.

Is there a new pokemon monday on the way?
  • amps225 - January 30, 2011 7:49 p.m.

FrozenImplosion didn't get it u only need one of them u can transfer them all but u only need one
  • Defguru7777 - January 30, 2011 5:21 p.m.

I'm with FrozenImplosion, I thought we only needed one of the three. I wasn't anywhere near a Gamestop when Raikou was given away, so I've only got Entei (hopefully I'll be able to get Suicune and Celebi). That would really blow. But I do have two shiny Enteis, will have two shiny Suicunes, and two Celebis, not to mention two Jirachis. I'm sure someone will be willing to trade me for a shiny Raikou.
  • Paralysis - January 30, 2011 4:24 p.m.

Zoroark = Seriously one of the stupidest looking designs of the 5th gen... and considering that we have an ice cream cone pokemon in this gen, that's saying quite a bit.
  • BulletLord909 - January 30, 2011 3:15 p.m.

not buying this. im not paying good money for pretty much the same game every couple of years. pokemon went shit after diamond
  • Pry0citer - January 30, 2011 2:23 p.m.

@animeman: Go to GameStop, turn on your DS, go to Mystery Gift, go to Wireless COnnection (Not Wi-Fi, but local) and you should download it. Otherwise most of them are given away via NWFC so you can stay home and download them
  • Schnipke - January 30, 2011 2:11 p.m.

@animeman as long as you have a way to a Gamesstop, you should be able to get the event pokemon since they should have WiFi at the store
