Nintendo reveals new Super Mario for 3DS

We predicted it early this year and today at GDC, Nintendo’s President Satoru Iwata made it official: the 3DS is getting a fully 3D, original Mario game. I don’t want to sound biased, but F**K YEAH!

Iwata was short on details. He mentioned it is being worked on by the Mario Galaxy team (double f**k yeah), and then showed a few screens and the above logo. He said the logo is temporary, and then hinted that the mysterious, shadowy tail’s importance will be revealed at E3. Mario fans will note that the tail is similar to the one in the Mario 3 logo, so can the Raccoon suit’s return be far behind?

We are awash in the glow of this new Mario info, but are left with a million questions. Will it be out this year? How many players will it be? Will it be playable at E3? Can raccoons really fly? What questions do you have in the wake of this new info?

This, Zelda, Star Fox, Paper Mario, and Mario Kart are the games that will make me get the 3DS. I guess I have more time to save my money lol.

Gotta say I was expecting Super Mario 64 3D. Which was an awesome game and all. But I'm glad to see that an original Mario is coming out instead. :)

Hmmmmm this is making me want a 3DS. I'll have to wait and see what comes out, but this is definitely helping.

Wow. I want the 3DS so much right now. Probably will get it once this comes out. Holy shit. A new 3D Mario that isn't a remake. Looks very similar to Mario 64 too. Can't fucking wait.

@AGENT JORRRG I cant tell if your being Sarcastic or being a mockery, This is a serious matter, 3D Mario Platformers are Rare limiting to only 1 per console, with the exception of Galaxy 2 that did an amazing Job. With the Gaming industry losing its taste on certain genres, Mario's 3D platformers restor the 3D Platforming genre and Nintendo does an excellent job on it that their masterpieces.

This might be a stretch, but you know how the raccoon suit debuted in SMB3? What if Nintendo is trying to tell us that this game will also end in the number 3? i.e. what if they're making Super Mario Galaxy 3? Just throwing it out there...

Okay this might be the reason I turn my Dsi in for a 3DS. I would get one for this and zelda and additional pokemon games to come
  • The_Tingler - March 3, 2011 1:14 a.m.

Massively excited about this. Well spotted with the Super Mario Bros 3 logo, I'd forgotten the '3' had a tail too! @HitmanSB07: Your question's already been answered (no), but I'm worried you're laboring under the misapprehension that the 3DS is just a DS with 3D added. It's not, it's a whole new console. This will only run on a 3DS for the same reason Super Mario Galaxy won't run on a Nintendo 64.

3DS purchase has just been justified.
  • IceBlueKirby - March 3, 2011 12:01 a.m.

This is the game that will sell a 3DS for me. Easily.
  • OneEyedGoon - March 2, 2011 11:13 p.m.

I think I jizz in my pants just a teeny bit.
  • Redeater - March 2, 2011 9:29 p.m.

This fucking better not be a stripped down version of Mario like that bullshit NSMB. I will be pissed. I have been waiting for a proper Mario sequel since I was a kid!!
  • Fiirestorm21 - March 2, 2011 8:39 p.m.

Why, I saw a raccoon fly just yesterday!
  • Nap1400 - March 2, 2011 8:36 p.m.

That subtitle just summed it up nicely. So one of my questions has been answered: it will be a 3D platformer. (Maybe with some 2.5D thrown in some areas) But now I have new questions. Will we see the return of Raccoon suit Mario? Why did Mario shrink and lose his hat in the bottom-right panel? What about this will they show at E3? Well, we'll find out soon enough. Man, March 2011 seems to be an awesome month for video games.

I'm glad I've got a 3DS pre ordered now. I almost cancelled thanks to the disappointing lineup of games
