New Sonic Generations 'City Escape' trailer is incredibly important

Okay, I was a little cynical when last writing about Sonic Generations, blathering on about how Sega’s doing the ridiculous, impossible, and unnecessary by trying so hard to please the unpleaseable. Classic Sonic, Modern Sonic – what’s the goddamned difference? FLIP FLOP WARNING: I’ve officially changed my mind, in typical Sonic fanboy fashion.

For one, I rather enjoyed the Sonic Generations demo quite a bit. However, I haven’t played the 3D modes, and years of Unleasheds, Swords and Secret Rings has left a profoundly bitter taste in my mouth. An unfortunate byproduct of those current gen faceplants is that it makes me forget about how much I love certain “Modern Sonic” games (if you can call 1999 modern?) Luckily, all that appreciation came roaring back after watching today’s brand new trailer.

Sonic Adventure 2, anyone?! I haven’t actually seen much of the 3D Sonic modes in Generations. That’s hardly my favorite game in the Hedgehog series, but I’m willing to admit that the opening level is still mesmerizing, timeless and just plain fucking important! Most of the reason classic Sonic fans like me love the pudgier hog version is because that’s the one we’ve spent the most time with.

Above: Put all your arguments aside and just admit this is awesome

But we old folks gotta remember: There’s another generation fans who came after us, and Sonic Adventure 2 is a giant part of their love. If you need more proof, I implore you to watch the video below a bunch of 4chan kids singing along to “Escape from the City.” Doesn’t matter what you think of Sonic – seeing that many relative strangers come together to sing a silly song is one of the most life-affirming thing this gamer has ever seen.

@db1331 - Don't be hatin' on the snowboard, mate. He used one in Act 1 of the Ice Cap Zone in Sonic 3, which is still one of the best zones in any sonic game ever, imo. Adventure 2 was decent enough but it still couldn't hold a candle to the early games. I'll be happy if collecting chaos emeralds goes back to being a challenge as opposed to a plot filler. Anyone remember the feeling of awe they felt when they first turned into Super Sonic?

I don't get it. Is this game supposed to be a remastered collection of all the good levels that have been in Sonic games, or is it a completely new game?

WTF? My Chem in a Sonic trailer? So odd.

Adventure 2 was good, but I still hold that Adventure was great, and much better! Either way, I still love hearing that song. :D

I absolutely cannot wait for this game now. Seeing the truck chase in glorious 2D (well, 2.5D) nearly caused me to explode with nostalgia, since I love the old Sonic games and that was one of the best parts about Adventure 2. I honestly don't think this game could disappoint on any level.

Growing up, I only was able to get 1 console per generation and with that said I followed a strictly Nintendo diet, NES to SNES to N64. Seeing the ads and watching the tv shows always made me want to play Sonic and it built up this kind of ultimate gaming greatness in my head. Recently (a year ago or so) I bought Sonic's Genesis Collection and finally played Sonic 1 and 2. While yes those were good games, the demo for Sonic Generations felt and looked more like what I imagined Sonic to be back in the 90's. Color me impressed, I can't wait to play Generations when it comes out later this year.

@Nikku7 Yes. Yes a million times. They're putting in levels from throughout the franchise so I'd say there's a pretty good chance of Sonic CD love. I love that song, oh my god.

The demo of it on xbox was pretty fuckin shweet but really only because of the fact that they went back to the old skool bloated belly hedgehog on a sidescrollin adventure fightin the badniks everyone whos played the original sonic has come to love

the classic Sonic bit looked fun... the modern Sonic bit made me want to hang myself. Why the frig does modern Sonic always have to have that snow board thing. it was fun in Sonic 3 but give it a rest, if he doesn't run more he's going to get FAT. shut up.

    @dmanhllnd awwwwwwww. Now I'm disappointed. :C I don't have a PS3 or 360.
  • Nikku7 - July 9, 2011 6:04 a.m.

Put in some levels from sonic cd as well and I may just proclaim it a must buy for me.
  • fullmetallegend - July 9, 2011 4:52 a.m.

Am I really the only one not so blinded by nostalgia to think that Sonic Adventure 2 (The Sonic and Shadow segments ONLY) were actually really fun? I mean, if we're talking about speed, you go a lot faster in that game than in the 2-D ones and I found it to still be an enjoyable experience. Of course, people will whine about anything they can. They always want something new and original, yet they also just want the same thing. Hmmmm, I like being a content and easy-to-please person. Give it a try. ;D

Love that song, havent heard it in a few years. The game actually looks promising, hopefully it'll turn out great. Sonic deserves it
  • angelusdlion - July 9, 2011 4:13 a.m.

Seriously DB, you think you're going to like a game you're set out to hate no matter how good it is? Keep your words soft and sweet.. some day you may have to eat them.
  • Crabhand - July 9, 2011 3:52 a.m.

As someone who actually really enjoyed Sonic Adventure 2, I have to say this trailer has piqued my interest. As long as the City Escape theme is intact they will have made me happy :)
  • Sleuth - July 9, 2011 3:38 a.m.

Sonic Adventure Battle 2 was outstanding. That was the first Sonic game I ever owned.
  • shorty_bobert - July 9, 2011 3:07 a.m.

Bring back my GODDAMN CHAO GARDEN! Otherwise, FUCK THIS GAME.
  • MidianGTX - July 9, 2011 2:39 a.m.

SA1 and 2 certainly had their share of issues, but the Sonic levels (and Shadow's too, despite the character being a bit of a grey area) were pretty damn fun. If that's the only aspect of modern Sonic games going into Generations it'll be a hit. So far there's no hint of slow-paced/werewolf sections so I consider all of db1331's comments totally unfounded and unprofessional. Oh, and City Escape was badass.
  • dmanhllnd - July 9, 2011 2:37 a.m.

@SparkleDevon sorry to burst your bubble but i heard city escape is exclusive to 360 and ps3 or was that speed highway?
  • dmanhllnd - July 9, 2011 2:32 a.m.

    Two words. Fuck. Yeah.
