Mass Effect 3’s story to feature over 1,000 variations

The choices you’ve already made in the first two Mass Effect games are adding up. In a recent interview with PC Zone, BioWare’s Casey Hudson revealed that the story in Mass Effect 3 will have over 1,000 story variations based on player choices in the first two games.

“We plan out the larger plot points of the story from one game to the next, but it would be impossible to plan it all in advance,” explained Hudson. “More importantly, we’d never be able to plan as many creative opportunities if we’d do it all up front. Instead, we record what a player has done in a play-through, and then we have all those choices available that writers can refer to as they build storylines… Numerically, it’s over 1,000 variables that we’ll have access to for shaping the Mass Effect 3 experience for people who’ve played the previous games.”

You can read the interview in its entirety in issue 224 of PC Zone, which is on newsstands now.

Good, I can't wait. Bring it on Bioware, but make sure it's ready. I love the people who complain that "Mass Effect 2 changed nothing." I beg to differ and this article and Mass Effect 3 will support me.

  • FatherTime - August 5, 2010 4:51 a.m.

Good. It had to be this way. Hell depending on your choice at a couple of the last sequences in game two the entire premise and supporting cast of the third game could change.

nerdgasim! Seriously have played the first game 6 times to have save files ready for ME2. I'm on my 4th playthrough (after just loosing people on purpose with my 3rd playthrough) with ME2, this time not an import/a straight up new character, and feel like I want to play it again with different variables. God I can't wait for ME3. I really can though, too many games atm. haha

can't wait for this game... might actually buy it while it's still full price

This is why I hate Dragon Age so much :( The fact that there is not much of a difference in playing a Human or Elf that would constitute a whole new expierence. And yet, there is enough details that would make you replay the game over and over just to get them all! Although, I am not saying a game where I can play as a human or a turian wouldn't be awsome...

Also the last issue of PCZone I believe... Most anticipated game full stop atm, although it'll probably release late next year or some time 2012, but hey, it's worth waiting for.

Does anyone else kinda think this is bad? I love mass effect but there's no way id be able to play every story variation, which sucks since I love everything about the ME universe.
