LittleBigPlanet Karting apparently happening. Isn't it about three years too late?

A surprise kart racer entry in the LittleBigPlanet franchise has reportedly been announced at the North American 'PlayStation Destination' event, according to retailer Future Shop Gamer. It will be Move compatible, 3D-enabled and will launch with a steering wheel peripheral for your Move controller.

Above: There it is. And BioShock Infinite is apparently awesome. Well, dur...

Of course, we could point out that ModNation Racers already does the 'build anything' idea very well. And that ModNation already has officially-licensed Sackboy DLC. Look:

Above: This isn't LittleBigPlanet Karting - it's the officially-licensed Sackboy DLC for ModNation Racers. You know, the one that's been available for months

Things get especially odd when the rumours suggest ModNation's developer United Front Games is making it. Do we really need two 'create anything' kart racers on PS3?

Also, the timing feels wrong. The idea of turning Sackboy into the Sony mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario or Sega's Sonic looked very likely when the original LittleBigPlanet was released in 2008, but the buzz around Sackboy, much as we love him, is pretty low right now. A Kart Racer spin-off does smack of an 'idea barrel' scrape-a-thon.

The game is rumoured to be a PlayStation 3 game only (not Vita) but when we contacted Sony for confirmation, we were given the usual 'no comment'. We'll keep you updated with news if/when we get it. Until then, squint at this hastily-removed screenshot from Future Shop Gamer. Looks pretty real to us...

I love LBP. ModNation Racers was awesome, but LBP could toss in tons more stuff to make it unique. In LBP, you have stuff like pistons and the like, which could factor into the stage creation quite nicely. Media Molecule is great, I have total faith in them. it's a tad pointless, but I'm sure it'll still be a good game regardless.

Pointless. MNR Road Trip is a system seller for me, so I see no point in this.

I bet this game isn't 3years too late for a few gamers' girlfriends...

Hm, your kind of right justin, But were gonna wait and see what happens. 1 thing though, i call BS if Nobody complains about Sony using a Steering wheel peripheral, even if its because people got used to it already after giving the Wii Crap talk about it..

Lbp2 blew my mind with the possibilities, but so did modnation racers, I dont find it necessary for them to step on this field after MNR's awesome performance, much less on these times as you have pointed out...

I'm all for console mascots, but this seems too little, too late for this gen.

I agree, Mario's the one still alive, Sonics still a mascot for Sega but not a console mascot anymore, and back then Sony DID try to use Crash Bandicoot as a mascot and just like Spyro, he's long gone while his creators are busy making Uncharted.

Your article title made me laugh. If I'm honest I have to agree, my love for the Sackboy isn't where it was a few years back.

    This seems completely pointless
